Trail braking
 

Can someone explain this method of braking ?

As i understand it you "trail" the brake pedal at a lighter pressure on turn in after getting the bulk of your slowing down done. It generates more of a weight transfer toward the front of the car, tightening your line and helping quell understeer. pressing the brakes too hard on turn in can generate terrible understeer as the front wheels struggle to cope with turning and slowing you down at the same time. It can also cause pretty big oversteer as the weight transfer unloads the rear tyres, which, at the same time, are trying cope with slowing the car down and follow the path of the front wheels.

I know cause i tried it and crashed!

My impreza is certainly very adjustable, and i find that simply lifting a little bit when the car is loaded up and pushing toward understeer tightends up the line nicely if i get it right... too big a lift and again i will end up in lift-off oversteer. I found a quick dab of the brakes on turn-in on dirt brought the back end round nicely and you can then controll how much more you want on the throttle+opposite lock.

Electronic brake force distribution on Newage cars makes this the normal way to use the brakes...

I always found this works better on front wheel drive cars, and my type r works better if the breaking is all over and done with by the time i get to the turn in and use the throttle to balance the car.
