guide for td05 rebuild ????
any one know of a guide thing the seals on the compresser side of my turbo are failing so have ordered a rebuild kit mines a td05 18g

It can be done quite simply and there are plenty of guides on the internet for rebuilding Mitsubishi CHRA's (Centre Housing Rotating Assembly) but I wouldn't advise it as they need to be balanced to extremely fine tolerances. It doesn't matter how much you mark up the nose nut etc, you still won't be able to get it back together in balance. At best it'll be noisey and and will have a drastically reduced working life, at worst it could result in extreme engine damage. If the turbo fails and allows the blades to hit the housing and break off they could be sucked tghrough your engine.
If you are adamant you want to do it yourself, at least send it off to Turbo remanufacturer to get it properly balanced. |
i'm not adamant about doing it my self was just trying to save a bit as just paid out for a box clutch and loads of othere stuff for it and now got oil in my boost pipes :(

How much oil have you got in your boost pipes? Is the car smoking at all? You will always have a thin film of oil as turbo's, by their very nature, will pass some oil.

yeah i know there's more than normal think it's the compresser oil seal thats on it's way not noticed any smoke yet but think it's just time

Ive rebuilt them without any problems by just marking them up. Unless you change the turbine or compressor wheel imo there's little or no gain in re balancing.

well i'll give it go i think seam's to be easy to do from what i've seen online not going to change the compresser or turbine and there's no play in the shaft right now just seams to me like there's to much oil in the intercooler pipe's for my likeing and i'm losing a bit of oil and at £50 for 5ltr dont want to be losing much

Theres no real skill involved in it, as long as you mark the thread on the turbine shaft, the nut and the compressor wheel all should be good. When there apart i like to give them a good clean with degreaser plus i polish the shaft to make sure its nice and smooth. :thumb:

I wouldn't. I used to work for a major Turbocharger supplier and i've seen what can happen. You wouldn't skimp on cheap oil or sub standard parts, so why risk your engine for a £200 rebuild? i wouldn't personally.

right i've ordered the kit already not a cheap on ether and i've found out the it can be balanced at my mates engineering firm just up the road for free if i take it in when the boss aint there over the weekend

why are you spending £50 on 5 litres of oil in a classic??!!!
its a old enigne and unless you know its had that type of oil from new i fail too see the bennifit. my 93 uses semi synth halfords crap changed regular which imo is better. |
the engines only done 3k since it was built the hole car less than 50k

it's a 360bhp fully forged that aint been built long with a td05 18g :) but looking like i got to sell for something bigger :( as new baby on the way

unless ur fully secure in what u plan to do id prefer a pro do it, dont cost much and can end up costing u an engine. But then again to even consider this iam guessing most are mechaniclly minded, shame iam not :cry:

the hole thing took about 2-3 hours thats with taking the turbo off and refitting was amazed how easy it was
