Re: Going 6 speed
Ok now that I've destroyed yet another box after only a couple months I'm forced to go 6 speed as I cant keep shelling out!
I've got a ver6 STi and just want to know exactly what I'll need along with the 6 speed box. Am I correct in needing the following: 6 speed flywheel 6 speed clutch prop shaft rear diff (180 or 160?) drive shafts gear linkages hubs? gearbox mounting bracket Please advise me on this and anything I should particularly look out for :thumb: |
Gearbox/Cradle
Linkage prop shaft rear diff 160 :thumb: Depending on the diff you may be ok with your driveshafts :) If you fit the NewAge diff you will need the newage rear drive shafts and the hub+handbrake assembly :) You can run a 6spd clutch and flywheel for which you would also need the starter, but not essential :) |
I destroyed two 5 speed boxes and had to go six speed, I've lost track of what I've got so can't help with a direct answer but I went for a Jap 6 speed with a shorter 6th.......bit of a pain on motorways.
I'd look out for a UK box which I think has a longer 6 speed, unless I am mistaken :) Shaun |
Yeah I think the UK box has a longer 6th (and possibly 5th also).
So I could use the diff currently on my car... is that a 180? What are the advantages of using the newage diff (160?)? |
You can also run a 5 speed clutch, flywheel & starter with a 6 speed box :)
Check the ratios of your 180 against the new box. |
So if its a UK box I can use my rear 180 diff?
But if its a JDM box I'll need to use the 160 rear diff? 5 speed flywheel and clutch with a 6 speed box really?? That'd be handy as I just forked out for a lightweight flywheel and clutch! |
But also what are the advantages of using the 160 over the 180 diff?

When I went Jap 6 speed I had to by the matching diff...... £400 plus VAT rings a bell LOL

Already looked on eBay and I'm not paying that much  This is getting closer to the price and its a UK box so can run with my rear diff/hub set up? Anyway I'm not paying more than £1500, maybe £1600 at a push |

Shaun Ouch thats a pricey rear diff! So for all intent and purposes its wiser to go for a UK 6 speed as it'll not only marry up to my rear diff and hubs, but also run at lower revs on motorways in 5th and 6th... ...is this the best option for me then? |
Your diff will need to be changed, 3.9 for a jap box and 3.54 for a uk box.
|
Dont forget the front stub axles.......needed them when i fitted mine to match 5 speed front shafts.....
Think they were about £200 from roger clark.... Stick with R180 imo.....my 06 uk box came with R180 rear diff and a helical front. |
....I'd personally go for the longer 6th if you are within sniffing distance of a motorway or fast A road. It's the MPG that hurts as well as the revs LOL

Result on the clutch & flywheel thanks Paulo :thumb:
I use the A1 everytime I get in my car to go anywhere, lol... Ok so a UK box would be best and a 180 rear diff would mean I keep my current rear set up. How would I know if its a helical front diff? If it is then I'd need front axles front drive shafts?) and if not then what I have stock will work? Really appreciating all your advise so far guys :) |

Front stub axles are the same as the ones in Automatic Impreza's ;)
Yep the 5 speed clutch, flywheel and starter all still fit :thumb: They certainly are......and new they are £200..:) |
I am sure the fella that did my V2 classic WRX conversion just reused the existing front 1995 driveshafts on my Bug STi Sixspeed ? :)

Interesting little fact... are they thicker/stronger front axles/driveshafts? If they're a benefit then I'd rather 'fatten up my shaft' than use the weaker current axle/driveshaft - esp as I like to launch it from time to time ;) |

That's what we did on my version sti Stu :thumb:
I wouldn't worry too much about the driveshafts 'weakness' until you are running considerably more power :) Especially as the classic driveshafts are cheap as chips used :) |
It's better to build in that weak link because driveshafts are cheaper and easier to replace than with gearboxes, diffs or clutches ;)
|
Or a twisted chassis ;) :lol1:
|
I have a 6 speed DCCD set up here from my WR1 if interested??
Rear hubs are sold though. WR1 has the same jdm ratios 1st-4th but longer 5th and 6th for the motorway |

Shaun Tony:D |
For a pure toy JDM with DCCD - for all the rest Hawkeye box...
3000 rpm at 80 mph. dunx |
Lot of mis information here.
On your car the easiest way is to use the following: UK speed, UK R160 Diff (its a straight swap with your current R160 diff). If you buy a pre Hawkeye six speed you've no need to mess around with stub shafts as the box will already have them and your current drive shafts will fit and a six speed prop. You can then use your existing five speed clutch, flywheel and starter if you wish. You could complicate matters and go R180 at the rear but that means new shafts hubs and brakes and unless you're running serious power (over 500bhp) then there really is no need. I ran the exact R160 set up in my 450 bhp UK Classic with out issue for around 60,000 miles |
Tony
Yep.......motorway speeds are a real pain on my jap box :( upside is that I can trundle behind the farm traffic in Rural Cumbria at 40 MPH in 6th :) Shaun |
