A nice surprise (Broadband speed)

just upgraded my Orange broadband package and they said my line could only handle 6mb speed well i've just done 3 seperate speed checks and the lowest was 7.9mb and the highest was almost 9mb:thumb: makes a huge difference(especially loading SLOW sc.net pages lol) so all in all Well Chuffed:thumb:

Is 7.9mb good these days ?

I'm waiting to upgrade my 50mb to 100mb next June :D

EddScott 28 September 2011 07:53 AM

Lol, I get about 5mb at best. Line is crap, BT say its enough and our exchange wont be upgraded until next year at the earliest.

SwissTony 28 September 2011 07:53 AM

some of us poor souls who live in the sticks barely manage to get 2MB, count yourself lucky !!

Ant 28 September 2011 08:08 AM

Swiss why not look into tooway.

CREWJ 28 September 2011 08:19 AM

You guys are all gods compared to my internet. I'm on a new housing estate with a MAXIMUM of 0.5Mb (Yes half!)

Shocking -.-

I miss my uni connection.....

Sounds interesting....

I think I'll look into it.

Edit: Just looked into it. Bloody expensive. £100 a month for a 25Gb limit

Yes but that comes with a 4Gb download limit and I could shred through that in an afternoon.

I thought that all new housing estates had fibre laid? And as such have good broadband especially when BT roll out Inifinity.

mamoon2 28 September 2011 09:23 AM

50mb Virgin here, did have 100mb but downgraded as 50mb is fast enough

what would scooby do 28 September 2011 09:24 AM

Initially they put it in but either they ripped it out or they just use the copper wires.

Either way the fibre isn't being used. Stupid council!

Nick

Had mine upgraded to fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) last week, AKA BT Infinity. Predicted speed was 9Mb as it turns out we're a fair way from the cabinet, but getting 20Mb. Can now stream iPlayer in HD with my nice new Panasonic plasma :thumb:

But yeah Virgin trounces anything BT can offer via twisted pair. Unfortunately don't live in a cabled area :(

billythekid 03 October 2011 10:14 AM

Get about 1Mb here. No FTTC until well into next year, and even then I expect we will be last to get a cab near our estate.

Its not as if I live in the sticks either, we are about 5 miles from Manchester and well inside the M60.

300 houses on our estate and everyone has the same problem. I guess the 1000 or so houses in the surrounding area have similar problems.

There is no cable either.

Be* will offer us "twice" our speed, but its £65 for a bonded 2ADSL2 line and an extra BT line..
