How TIMES have changed!!

As a 40 year old petrol head, i know in the day that a car that could acclerate from 50-70mph in 3rd gear in less than 5 secs was considered quick- hence why the original uk turbo Impreza which recorded a time of 3.4 secs was considered epic!!

Then the my98 sti iv recorded 2.8sec in the same increment. For comparison, a Honda S2000 set a time of 3.8secs and a Renault Clio 172 a time of 4.6.

Ive just seen a road test.
report of the latest 1.6 Mini Cooper S that records a time of 2.6secs from 50-70mph in 3rd gear!!!

That result is amazing and shows how things have moved on over the years.

I know- its a bit anal to be concerned with these increment times but ive been force-fed them over the years so seeing that now a girly Mini cooper s can post such quick times shows how things have moved on big time!!

Wow, thats good, still don't want another crappy Mini though

L.J.F 23 September 2011 09:58 PM

I would rather chop a arm off than own a Mini Cooper that is suited to gheyers:D

funkyrimpler 23 September 2011 10:07 PM

nice to know that theres another 40yr old bloke on here who probably needs to grow up a bit:thumb:

mattvortex 23 September 2011 10:09 PM

I wouldnt want a Mini either but what i was trying to get across is that years ago there were different levels of performance between classes of cars -but nowadays a "hothatch" like this Mini has exactly the same acceleration at these speeds as something like a Jaguar XKR, and quicker than a Impreza STI IV or R34 Skyline GTR.

In the nineties, something like a Cosworth Sierra would have hammered a hot hatch in the gears but nowadays thered be nothing in it ( well up to a ton)

Things certainly have changed. My first car was a 1963 850 Mini which I bought in 1966, and modified for 1000cc class. Would be embarassed to find the 50-70 time for what I thought was a quick car.
Once a petrol head always a petrol head !
and yes - I need to act my physical age, not my mental age.

44 next week. Still car daft

funkyrimpler 24 September 2011 10:36 AM

maybe we should start a coffin dodgers wing of scooby net....minimum age 40 so i can join :hjtwofing

his-n-her-scoobs 24 September 2011 11:01 AM

May be wrong but I have a feeling that the average age of Scoobynetters is surprisingly high (dictated more by the high running costs of the vehicles related to disposable income than anything else).

More likely we will have to set up a creche area for the under 40's LOL

Anyone done a POL?

:)

Micheru 24 September 2011 11:24 AM

Yeah those Mini Cooper's are pretty quick at certain speeds. Had one following me a few weeks ago. Keeping up to a point, though I think it was modified didn't look or sound normal.

Turbotits 24 September 2011 11:41 AM

Things certainly have changed.
Similar to others im in my 40's.

But back in my youth boring and stroking 1275cc minis to 1430 cc and i though they wete rapid with 120hp.
Or sticking 1600cc cortina engines in 1100 escorts still using the 1100 box and diff.

1430 damm, i thought the most you could do was 1410, so all those years ago i could of had an extra 20cc in my mini :lol1:

Lol yea

i seem to remember you used a 73.5mm bore and an 86mm crank. Thats from memory though
you could also go to a 74mm bore but these seemed to blow the headgaskets across cylinder 2 and 3 as the linings were to thin

Galifrey 24 September 2011 12:02 PM

Never loved the A-series, preferred my '66 Anglia with 1500 stage 3 engine twin dcoe's.

I ran out of talent on that one sadly :)

Now that was fun. My estate had 1600 kent engine from a Mexico overbored to 1750 with piper 270 cam and 32/36DGAV Weber. RR'd at +100bhp at the wheels, and broke exhaust valve springs with monotonous regularity from over revving. So much so that I devised a tool to hold up the valve whilst I changed the spring at the roadside LOL

All usual upgrades, capri front struts with RS2000 vented discs and Ambassador 4 pot calipers adapted for single system use. 9 inch rear drums. Homemade anti tramp bars and panhard rod so I could play on the original Ty Croes track near RAF Valley (long before it was tarmacked).

Originally "hearing aid beige" but rebuilt from the local scrappy. Red bonnet, yellow front wings, lime green drivers door, white passenger door and bright green tailgate IIRC but I didn't care. Added more pleasure to p1ssing on the Cavalier SRI130 and XR3i brigade. Even embarrassed a few Golf GTis LOL

NO ABS OR TRACTION CONTROL yeehah!

:)

his-n-her-scoobs 24 September 2011 12:15 PM

Ran out of talent in Viva HC with Blydenstein head and many other mods that I was never sure of as someone else did it. Was quick for a 1300 at the time.

Rolled 3 times end over end. Have the pictures at work, will post the sometime for a laugh.

jesus gents. im only 32 and thought i was bad!! When i first passed my test i had a mk1 fiesta supersport, then an xr2 with twin 40's which i thought was super fast.

This is how bad it is......i was telling one of our petrol head apprentices at work about my car history and told him that the fiesta had a manual choke, to which he didnt have a clue what i was on about. haha

god i remember those winter mornings fiddling with the choke to get the thing to start.

TBH I think this is a flawed measure of how 'fast' a car is. For me the gold standard will always be the 1/4 mile time and trap speed.

For example, my R33 skyline would normally red-line at about 60 mph in 2nd, then would need an upshift to 3rd. I'd hazard that the R34 GTR would be very close to 70 mph red-lining in 2nd, at 50 mph in 3rd might not quite be on-cam or on-boost. You get what I am saying?

yea good old chokes.lol. Some cars didnt like any throttle, some you needed to pump the pedal to get them to fire up. I do think cars had more character in those days.
I had to take an aprentice to a breakdown recently on a morris minor. When i said to him the fuel pump isnt running strip it,clean and reset the points in it. I just got a gormless look. Lol
Was good training for him as hed never seen points. We had them out the dizzy to for a clean and reset just for fun.

morandpeter 24 September 2011 04:24 PM

god thats bringing back memories of replacing rotor arms and brushes! thats when my idea of immobilising the car was removing a lead from the dizzy cap!

so its pretty clear then im going to end up like you old coffin dodgers in ten years time then.

Its funnny as when i get a new car i always tell myself i'll keep it standard or maybe just change the wheels.....never lasts long.
