grey squirrels are classed as vermin since their introduction from the usa. red squirrels in the uk are protected. most live in scotland however the eastern grey squirrel population appears to be able to out-compete the red squirrel for various reasons:

The eastern grey squirrel can easily digest acorns, while the red squirrel cannot.

The eastern grey squirrel carries a disease, the squirrel parapoxvirus, that does not appear to affect their health but will often kill the red squirrel.

When the red squirrel is put under pressure, it will not breed as often.

kill the grey if you want but leave the red heads alone

Grey Squirrels are good eating apparently and plenty of them around. Not our native red squirrel nutkins though. :nono:

Very nice pictures.

I think all squirrels look attractive, both red and grey ones. I agree it was a mistake to introduce the grey ones all those years ago but I still like seeing them.

Les, you are really starting to worry us! :D

I considered looking into reintroducing red squirrels here in ml and kill off the Grayson but there was not a single group who could advise me on how to do it..

Wow my worms have just turned up..

Please explain why. Is it a mortal sin to like the look of a grey squirrel?

Les :)

Not here they aren't! There are loads of them here, much nicer than the grey ones.
