Painted splitter with Plastidip
Been meaning to sort my splitter out for a while now, got it from the states and although the quality is good the finish is not a patch on the last one I had from the same supplier, anyway was not happy so gave it a good clean up with some 1500 grit wet and dry, ordered myself some Plastidip and set to work, first coat went on a treat, second and somehow 2 hairs found their way into the mix, let it dry off a little and tried to remove, this resulted in a tennis ball size patch of the fresh paint peeling of like latex and the more I tried to fix the worse it became, so with the help of the Mrs we peeled the first 2 coats off the whole splitter and I gave it a second attempt!
4 coats went on in all and I must say when you get it right with this stuff you get it right, looks like a top pro job and all for £15 delivered, gives a nice light textured affect, similar to OE, is slightly soft/rubbery to the touch so should not chip but ultimatly looks great. Only a couple of iphone pics but you should get the idea, for splitters, fog covers etc I highly recomend it. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...h/6a939822.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...h/7dd4f178.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...h/a0b00cea.jpg Cheers A |
Quality job, well done :D
As an aside, every time i see a pin stripped grille i think i must do mine. Is there a DIY you followed, no idea what the strip is made of etc? LOL |
Cheers Tone.
The stripe is a 2 minute job, pop into Halfrauds and buy some pin stripe, the type that usually runs down the side of your car, think its 6mm wide and about 3m long for about £4.99, chop off about a metre and stick it on, no need to remove the mesh or anything complicated like that, the ends tuck up underneath so do not need to be perfect either. Here you go bud, think I managed to get some in 6mm though IIRC

Ah, so its just a 'sticker' not a plastic bit of trim or anything fancy?? I think i can manage to do that i think, job for the weekend :D
Cheers, Tony. |
looks good fella, hopefully it will be hard wearing.
dam you im off to halfords to get some pinstripe!! |
Just looking at the pics again, it looks like the colour and finish is very similar to the lower lip of the grille? Is it a good match? I was thinking of spraying the grille all black at some point to get rid of the silver top edge, if this is a good match i'd give it a go with this.

I think it is probably the closest you'd get, however think you'd be best off spraying the whole grille assembly to get a good even finish, I know of a few hatches that have sprayed the lower fog surrounds too to get rid of the silver horizontal bits
