Oil temperature reading, is this normal?
 

Since having the prosport stepper gauges fitted I have noticed that generally when the car is warm and normal driving the temp sits at approx 70-80 however today it was warm weather and sat in traffic all the way home at stop start and crawling speed, the temp was up just under 100.

When the traffic cleared a bit and the car could get up to about 40mph the temp seemed to drop down slightly.

Finally when I got home I let the car sit before turning off for approx 5min, the temp was sat just under 100 and stayed there for the 5mim duration.

Does all this sound normal?

imagine on a realy hot day how hot it gets, may need to get an oil cooler fitted

I get my oil to 90/100 when driving hard. I am running 10W60 though.

Anything up to 115 is fine, IMHO.

If it stayed there I'd ease off a touch.

But I fitted an oil cooler to mine for the summer months, and remove it through the winter.

The thing is I didn't drive the car hard at all, the whole journey back was slow due to traffic. The temp was just below 100 when sat in the congestion and by the time I ended the journey before turning off.

Don't worry chap. 100 is fine.

Ok just had a read of some old posts regarding oil temp. Seems lots of people regularly see 90-100 normal driving and 110 when giving it the beans or on a track. My normal temp is around 80-90 but guess with the day being rather warm and the stop start traffic, the increase in oil temp is justified.

Mine sits at 90 with normal and fast driving. Would expect it to rise slightly in traffic or very slow driving.

I have the same gauges and that is perfectly normal and a ok. :-)

The temp seen on gauges in isolation is perhaps not the most important factor.... where the temp sender is located (in conjunction with the temps) is and the gauges used.

Temps at the oil filter will be less than those further up the block.

Normal driving at around 80degs sounds quite low, especially when rising to 100degs in stationary traffic (temps today are hardly that hot). I've never had differences of that between those two environments before.

IMO and experience.

My sender is off the oil filter and normally sits at 90degs (or just below) in normal circumstances at operating temperature. In stationary traffic it may sneak up to 92.5degs. Trashing the pants off it on the road and i've never seen 100degs yet. Track would be a different story though.

Your temps are not an concern in reality, but the differences do seem a bit weird to me.

Differences between sat in traffic on a hot day and when driving on a normal cool day at a steady speed don't seem strange to me after reading other posts.

It is, and I do it because of my short run to work.

A modine is better for a quick warm up.
