E90/92 M3 - Who's had one?

Sold my lotus Exige S a month or so ago to pay for an impending house extension.

If I've got any money left once the extension is done (which is unlikely!) I'll need a new toy, already crawling the walls driving my Saab 9-5 daily beater! I loved the exige, most fun car I've had and I never once got bored of it in 2 and a bit years ownership. I'm tempted to get another but.....................

as I'm getting old now (32, lol) thought it was about time I tried a grown up car. I've had 5 different scoobs, couple of skyline GTR's and the exige. Borrowed a friends E46 M3 recently and was quite impressed, not hugely quick but enought to have some fun and lots of toys. Can pick up a decent one for maybe £10k now or I could do a bit of finance and go for the current model, would be limited to £25-30k tops so an early 07 -08 reg.

I'm hankering after the current shape M3 as love the thought of a V8, have considered RS4 also but really want something RWD.

So after lots of waffle, has one of the great scoobynet masses owned an E90/92 M3? If so, what did you think? All I know is I only want a manual car and preferably the 3 door with carbon roof as it looks cool :D

DanPhillips 31 August 2011 08:27 PM

I bought a 2008 Arctic White 6spd M3 Coupe with the carbon roof and fox red leather interior just over 4 weeks ago :)

Refined untill you get to 6000 rpm, then its a hoot! The noise is great!

Slightly clunky gearbox as expected, lovely interior, fab looks.

Definately worth a test drive!

One of the last V8 BMW's you'll be able to buy :(

Cheers

Dan

Hi Dan

exactly the spec I'd like, white, red leather and manual, you swine :D Mind if I ask how much you paid? Would also consider black or grey but white is

How you finding the car, anything you don't like? Assume tax is high band £400+ per annum.

Would like a set of the Competition Pack alloys as well but I rather suspect they will be silly money to buy from BMW.

Agreed with everything going turbo charged this will be the last N/A powered M car.

On a side note, friend has ordered a new M1 in white, going to pick it up in 6 weeks with him, can't wait!

DanPhillips 31 August 2011 08:55 PM

White with the black roof is easily the most popular...making it the easiest to sell on :)
$49k, living in Vancouver so no car tax :)
But the insurance is $$$ especially when my 16 year old daughter wanted to learn in it :D (She's had to make do with a Hyundai Santa Fe to learn in instead)

It could do with a tad more torque :) Supercharger next year will sort that!
Will ship it down to these guys http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=476285

Nothing bad to report yet! Got it with an extended warranty and its CPO...

Cheers

Dan

To old for an Exige?

I've got at least *cough* 10 *cough* years on you and if mine hadn't have been written off I'd still have it.

To old, indeed.....mutter mutter.....

;)

I have the E90 M3 as my daily drive(dec/09 on 59 plate).....great car to drive slow/fast in but compare to my P1 its abit boring , has all the worthwhile options EDC, DCT 7speed box , comfort access, voice control , extended leather, carbon fibre interior trim etc etc , see my garage for pics .
you be better off with the 09 model year as these have harddrive satnavs so you can store music files on the drive .

beware that the v8 drink alot of petrol ( I average 16-18 mpg around town).....great if you can afford the petrol

SPEN555 01 September 2011 10:57 PM

On one of the forums there was a guy posted he'd had his E92 M3 stolen and apparently they are pi$$ easy to steal without having the car keys

Fab car seem lacking in torque for a 4.0LTR V8 at 295ft lbs?

juggers 01 September 2011 11:55 PM

Great cars! handle well in the dry poo in the wet.Had one back in 08 was a great car!!

RS4 only has 20lb/ft more, yet the M3 is considerably quicker once moving..
They are a revy V8 at the end of the day and not a lazy V8 like in a lot of the Yank mobiles.. The C63 is a torque monster for a V8, but it is a 6.2 so hardly on the same level..

Bear in mind the RS4 is 4 wheel drive, hence higher drive-train losses and the M3 pulling away from a roll

these look to be in around the 25k mark now. Geting very affordable. But looking at the drop on the e46 m3, they have a ways to go yet. I fancy a white one with red leather then they are low enough. Then all i need is the e30 and ill have the set :)

chris singleton 07 September 2011 06:24 PM

Cheers for the comments guys.

The Eismann exhaust sounds awesome, I've heard a full race version on an M5 which was incredible. But at £1800 on the M3 I simply couldn't justify the expense. I thought £400 for my old Blitz Nur Spec was too expensive, lol

Might have to get an E46 M3 as a stop gap until my extension is done and I know how much money I have left to play with.

Have you thought about a 335i. I was looking at a E46 M3 and the e92 335's seamed a much better buy.

but its not a "M" though is it ...............:)

Jimpreza 07 September 2011 11:22 PM

True, but I was so disappointed after driving a e46 m3. I find the 335i quicker in the real world, miles better dct gearbox, probably more efficient, nicer interior and it's not the old model.

I do sometimes wish I'd bought a 57 reg E92 M3 but I bottled it.

P1Fanatic 08 September 2011 12:12 PM

335i with DCT decent example still minimum of mid £20k's tho. I know as been looking myself. If you have one what mpg do you get? Still amazes me that BMW have a 3.0 TT in a lower road tax band than my 2.0 n/a CTR and less than half the price of the current 2.5 STi......

I love the silverstone blue, but love what you've done there.

P1 - I average anywhere between 20 and 35 mpg on the inboard computer. I had 2 weeks travelling 10 miles a day to work and it only managed 21 mpg as it barely warmed up. On a good drive at 70 - 90 mph I easy get over 30mpg. It's around town it's not good.

I only ever had best 16.7 mpg from new !!!(its on 8950miles today and had its brake service done@£116 ) have to say very "cheap" car to maintain if you do every low mileage due to CBS servicing, only cost me around £400ish in servicing in 18 months of motoring.

Great car though , but I think its really is wrong time to sell in current climate (but then the GT-R is even a harder car to sell ...so you might gets a bargain)

Would a remap not improve the fuel economy?

A friend has an e92 m3 and can't believe how good the mpg is in my 335i. I keep telling him what do you expect with another 100+ bhp

its not the 100+ bhp, its because one's a highly tuned N/A engine and the other is a twin turbo engine which can produce similar bhp but in a smaller engine size.... why do you think the Next generation M3s are twin turbo :)

Thats interesting bighead the comment you made its abit boring compare your P1! I was considering chopping my P1 in mint condition for an E46 not the E90 that you got which is alot better than an E46! Better think again :thumb:

Yeah I see cars are struggling to sell , I'm not be too bothered if mine doesn't sell as I love the car , just got a itch to scratch that is the GT-R :D

would be good to find someone with a GT-R who's looking to free up some cash and will do a swap with mine , i'll keep my eye on what's about

Mid £20k's will get you an E90 M3 also.
