Do I REALLY need a front mount??

Hi

as above; do i really need to go FMIC?? Car is a MY97 WRX wagon, aim is to break the 300bhp mark. 310- 315 would be nice but i'll take 300.1:lol1:

So my aims are quite humble really. Despite this is the WRX TMIC as found on my car up to the job? It's really only being forced to go to an induction kit type filter and the associated in-engine bay breathing and possible MAF issues that put me off the FMIC. TMIC from the same year STI do the trick?

Thanks for any help!

Ash

My 98 Type R makes 303 bhp with the tmic.

Not really sure if the classic STI tmic is any better than the classic WRX tmic

not for 300bhp no, it would be a good mod if you were planning on tracking it though

the sti intercoole is bigger and better and you can put water jets on it

myblackwrx 21 August 2011 09:01 PM

You can plumb in the water spray on any intercooler.

slap an sti tmic on it.....

snake1906 21 August 2011 09:40 PM

as above sti intercooler is what you want bigger is better

Your ACT's will be too high with the WRX top mount

Fitting a later STi top mount is a ball ache, and pricey. You can fit a front mount which will do the job properly for just a little more

+1 FMIC's are pretty easy to fit in good kit form like the GT Hybrids :)

Not strictly necessary but from a safety point of view, charge temps will be significantly better with a FMIC :)

thank you everyone for replying!:thumb: So i can rule out keeping the WRX intercooler. The car hasn't touched a track but does get driven very hard. So just got to decide if the simple (i hope!) swap with the appropriate classic sti TMIC (and silicone Y-pipe) is perfectly up to the job? On the other hand maybe i am getting a bit too hung up on wrecked MAFs and hot engine bay air being sucked in by the cone filter associated with the FMIC...

No, you aren't.

My classic, running around 300bhp, and with cone filter, (MAF-less) detted itself to death after heatsoak on a French motorway.

It is now rebuilt closer to 400/400 with a fully forged 2.5, AND an FMIC.

If you're only after 300hp then an Sti top mount would be ideal. I'd also do away with the cone filter and get a good panel filter.

I use an Sti top mount and a green panel filter on my wrx and its fine for 350+hp and 380+lbft tq.

Good luck with whatever you choose mate!!!! :-)

thank you everyone. Sounds good noturbo, sti intercooler it is i recon... yeah i am running the standard air box and green filter already :)

noturbo 23 August 2011 03:24 PM

Good choice mate :-) are you upgrading your turbo or anything else? If you are, and with your other mods and a re-map you will be more than happy!!!

ENJOY!!!!! :-D

I am running the standard wrx top mount on my 94 wagon. had to change to a cone filter as it was holding it back. with the other mods the engine is hitting a nice 315bhp and 360ft lb.

Brave man that mapped that to 360ftlbs ! what injectors ? 380's ? :)

wimpy 23 August 2011 05:37 PM

440's flow tested to exat 440. VF34 hence the high number.

Yes mate, VF23, 440s, Apexi FC, walbro, full sports cat exhaust system, etc. After an EBC too as my boost isn't holding at peak charge at all. So that and an sti intercooler should hopefully allow me to break 300bhp :) dyno'd at 276bhp now so just need that extra 24bhp!

Thanks everyone, superb help from all as always!:thumb:
