Christ! what are you buying?

We are a family of 4 (1 baby) and our shopping is £60 a week including nappies an formula.

Although we bulk buy meat and washing powder from Costco and buy fruit and veg from the green grocers (green grocers only costs about £7)

And we eat very well

gallois 20 August 2011 01:04 PM

I think the germans budget has a fair bit of beer in it.

We have a family of four, and spend £90 on a supermarket shop, prob spend about £20 for corner shop bread and milk during the week, and £15 for fresh fruit and salad during the week, so £125 a week on food.

Fav foods?: tuna pasta bake, spaghetti bolognaise, omelette, curry and rice, sunday morning fry up,

mamoon2 20 August 2011 01:07 PM

Favourite foods: Thai Green Curry, Pappaya Salad, Chicken Pittas with Rice, Chicken and Beans, Stir Frys, Roast Dinner

Saxo Boy 20 August 2011 01:50 PM

LOL at the Box of Bakers :D

boxst 20 August 2011 02:15 PM

Interesting ... Germans with beer, Americans with Pizza and us with crisps, sweets and biscuits.

Correlate that to heart disease and obesity...

The families pictured show that those with the smallest budgets have the most number of children.
Something wrong for that to be the case

They are the families where at least one of the children -maybe more will probably die so they need to have lots to ensure at least some make it through to carry on subsistence farming. That and a complete absence of contraception.

interesting non the less

from my experience, glasweigan diets consist of chippies, tennents super/buckfast, fags and irn bru, and thats just the kids!

RobsyUK 20 August 2011 06:17 PM

Yes but this is sooo silly. If they all had less children then there would be more food to go around, less chance of famine. More chance of getting medication and help due to less demand on these services.
Instead of charity, these people need free condoms

just illustrates how much you dont have to spend - if you dont have anything to spend to start with

Food in Europe is a lot more expensive than in the UK, though.

When I moved to England from Sweden I was shocked at how cheap food is in the UK. I was 21 at the time, and it was the first time I could afford to actually eat meat etc every day.

chocolate_o_brian 20 August 2011 10:02 PM

I still can't figure out how some families spend upwards of £200 a week on food unless you had 6+ kids. Is it to show off to your friends or something

My family of me, Mrs and baby son spend £90-95 for a fortnightly shop at Asda. The odd £7.55 is needed for formula but usually included. We spend about £20 every 3 weeks at our butcher on things like bacon, pork chops, diced meat for curries, belly pork, sausages etc. And we certainly don't survive off Smart Price stuff either, plenty of branded things in there.

I might go start shopping at Waitrose and spend twice as much :p for the same stuff!

What on earth do you buy, more to the point?! Food costs a fortune ... how is it possible to survive on £60 p/w? We have a budget of £600 p/m which we struggle to stay within.

Eh?! Most of their kids die ... if they just had one then it would die & the family would go with it.

GazTheHat 21 August 2011 02:44 AM

Interesting.

The Italians looks the best. The British has just processed food.

fatscoobfella1 21 August 2011 08:57 AM

We spend around £70 a week on food/drink for 2 people and dog and a rabbit!!

I cant understand what people are buying if you go to the supermarket and spend hundreds a week!!

You may as well eat out every night!

UK WAGON 21 August 2011 09:10 AM

the uk is probably one of the worst for food waste also , the ammount that gets dumped per family per year is scary .

Ah, is that your photo in your avatar? Maybe that explains why you spend so much:)

davyboy 21 August 2011 09:58 AM

Hard to compare fairly.

Do you buy lunch during the day, or take food to work?

Do you get a take away once a week?

Is beer included?

fatscoobfella1 21 August 2011 10:09 AM

I take sandwiches and fruit to work for lunch, thats included in our budget..I dont have breakfast.

We do have a takeaway from time to time..... Maybe twice a month.

Spending £30 a day on weekly basis is unbelievable, unless a large family is to be fed.

Edit.... Beer, usually get 4-5 nice bottles of beer for a Sunday night. Depending on the deals that are on thats usually a fiver a week. Or costco always sell at a £1 a bottle.

Terminator X 21 August 2011 02:11 PM

I'd like some evidence of what you're buying for £60-70 a week in order to feed a family. I call bullsh*t on it ...

TX.

Leslie 21 August 2011 02:21 PM

I can't believe that they can put that much food away in this country let alone those others who eat even more!

It is interesting that during the austerity years just after WW2, it was possible to feed a family of three adequately if not with enormous meals for 50p a week!

Call bullsh*t all you like, but I KNOW I can feed myself, Nat and Isaac on £95 for two weeks including 2 baby formula's as it was what our Asda bill came too. Oh and £20 for fresh meat from the butchers. That's just under £60 a week for a family of three not just living on processed crap :thumb:

If I had the reciept from last Friday I'd scan it and show you.
