How to diagnose coilpack failure V1 WRX

Hello guys, I cant get any more than around 3500 revs without my engine hesitating and almost cutting. At first I though it was overboost but have installed a guage is boost is normal sooo my next thought would be coil pack or crank sensor. I am going to put it in diagnostic mode tommorow and attempt to read the fault but looking at the codes there doesnt seem to be one for coilpack and certainly not one for each individual pack. Any advice would be appreciated, cheers

this happened to me and it was the MAF

I think you have to take them out and look for cracks or noticeable sign of damage? When I sold some (yes I do have 4 more sitting around) someone took the rubber off around the tip and was looking for damage

when my coilpack failed the cel light came on and when i attached code reader it told me the coil no.

could be-

Boost leak or coil pack but im guessing boost leak. if it hasnt thrown up the eml light

First thing I would be checking is the maf, but there is no harm in removing the coil packs and checking them for cracks... fairly straight foward and easy job to do

Thanks for your imput guys, forgot to say CEL came on the first time I took it up to 3.5k revs and this is after fitting replacement engine. Otherwise engine runs sweet but does smell a little fuely.

Don't forget that even if there's no visible crack, one/some could still have a "nano crack/s" that could cause arcing still...

This happened to a couple of my v.1 coilpacks on my previous '93 WRX.

Thanks for your advice guys but I have sussed the problem, took it for a drive yesterday and realised I have no speedo. No speedo = no speed sensor = limp mode!! Will be fixing satruday.

Nice one! Not too much of ballache hassle/price-wise to fix.

So much better than having to buy/rotate coilpacks, eh? ;)
