Doing about 60mph on his GSXR 600 and this happened to his rear tyre!

Not right is it! Tyre done about 3000 miles.

3000 miles is about right for a rear 4 pot bike tyre, my gixer did about that, my v-twin used to eat them in around 1500 miles. That looks a bit like it was over inflated and mainly used for straight roads, however if it was mine, I'd be speaking to michelin and see what they have to say about it - he may even get a new pair out of them!

He may want to ask for a new pair of under crackers also :D

Deffo - I'll bet it wasn't just the road that had a long brownish stain on it!

"Heathrow keks" my mum used to call them - big skidmarks!

Wear looks normal to me after 3K miles. No matter if they are 'dual compound' on the road you always wear the middle faster than the sides. I would get it looked at by a tyre expert though as it shouldn't disintegrate like that! (Under normal circumstances that is ..... ).

Cannot believe that a branded tyre like that should come apart with that amount of wear left on the tyre.

I would certainly take that further with the manufacturer. I imagine that they would be anxious to inspect that anyway in case they have a fault somewhere that they don't know about.

He was certainly lucky to get away with it though.

What sort of tyre was it? A 2CT or a softer one?

I can get 9000 out of a decent dual compound rear and that's on a Blackbird, mind I ride it to work and back not just take it out and thrash it so that might help.

Seaching on the net seems it a common issue and they did recall some in 2007 or 8. This was purchased from Demon Tweaks!

Could be an old stock tyre (some can be on the shelf in a warehouse for over five years!); Manufacture date will be on the sidwall.

Modern high performance bike tyres have a strip of carbon around the centre or just off centre. Bike tyres do not conduct electricity, they have little to no carbon black in them. They need to be able to earth any static electricity that builds up on the bike, to prevent a spark and explosion when filling up. It looks as though it may have split at this carbon strip.

Michelin do not sell old stock tyres but some garages get away with selling old stock tyres,ask your mate to look on the MOT see if it needed a new tire in the last 5 years and who put it on ??

Thats either 1 huge chicken strip to the right or something out the ordinary was done to that tyre for it to let go.

Like rig said look at the chicken strip and the middle part of the tyre.
