Speedo Fault......

Hi guys, just looking for some help. I was driving down the motorway yesterday and it bucketed it down to the point were you couldnt see, I'm doing 40mph blind. Then I hit this big bit of water and nearly aquaplaned into the central reservation, all of a sudden my speedo stopped working and I lost power for about 2 seconds and it kicked back in.

The car is a 2000 jap import wrx bugeye, the speedo has began to work and is not always working correctly. Is it possible that there is a slight loose connection or has water some how managed to trip the ECU system? Not taken it to a mechanic yet but I think I will be doing soon.

Any help or advice would be great.

Thanks Kev

Hi there try have look at rear of your speedo cluster,if its is connected, maybe is just disconnected?

Just try these steps

It sounds like there's a short in the wiring to the gauge cluster. You can pull it by removing 6 total screws. It's super easy to check.

1-Pull the 2 screws you can see on the top of the plastic bezel around the cluster.
2-Pull the bezel out by maneuvering it around the steering wheel
3-Pull 2 screws from the top of the gauge cluster
4-Pull 2 screws from the bottom sides of the cluster
5-The gauge cluster will now have 2-3 plug on the top side that you'll need to check. Make sure everything is tight.

Not sure, maybe will be this fault, which is known on Imports,Speedo converter(KMH->MPH KM->MILES),check cables and if its nothing loose.

Cheers mate, yeah ive checked it, all wires in, pulled them all out gave them a bit of a clean and plugged in. Seemed fine initially, then speedo jumped a few times then went off.

And how do I go about sorting that? take it to a garage? Big job?

Look at the driver side down the transmission tunnel for the electronic speedo connection. Remove the plug, dry or spray with WD40, check wiring for continuity from the drive unit to the wiring loom. It may be that the force of water hitting the wiring has pulled a wire or just a short due to water.
