Trying to find what went wrong.
 

When I bought my car it had a "dead" engine, in that it would fire nicely for 3 revolutions but on the 4th it had a HEAVY HEAVY Clunk. I`m now trying to find out what went wrong, but so far not had much luck lol.

Was expecting to see valve damage, but nothing.

Did have some truly COWBOY touches, see the cam bolts. :freak3: :wonder: :wonder: :wonder:


Once I had her up the bench I needed a stand to put it on, so I found two 2-pot disks bolted them together and hey presto, a stand that I could rest the flywheel on, and rotate the engine so I could easily remove bits.

Anyways this is how far I`ve come today. Started off with this.

Then lifted it onto my bench. And started.

Found it. The one piston sits lower at the top than the other 3, by eye I`d say 2-3mm.

Will separate the halves tomorrow and see whats caused it, I`m thinking its a spun big end bearing.

Happy now I have spare heads, and also removed the oil pressure bung and cleaned it up as I`m going to use it as the sender from the 3rd Cylinder bung.

Cool photos. I aint got a clue what half of it is that im looking at, but interesting nonetheless. let us know if the problem you found fixes it ! :)

Some great photos there. Can't wait to see the failed bearing.

Only way I learn is by doing, its all well looking at a book or listening to someone but nothing better than getting your hands dirty.

Well that will be tomorrow now, I`m kind of in the middle of a crap job of making my wheels white lol.
Just want to see what they look like, before I spend out getting them done properly.

Good work and a great spot. I'd love a spare engine to just play with and attempt a rebuild but I've heard that they can be quite temperamental to put back together:wonder:

One way to find out lol.

It means IF I need to do major work on my currenty running engine then I`ll know my way around it. All I`ll really need then are tolerances and torque settings.
