Advice on jap imports...

hi, new to this forum and the world of scoobys,

we curently have our eyes on a scooby, its a jap import, the seller seems really genuine, but there are a few things that are making me ponder, its a 1996 wrx sti first reg in uk in 2003, we have quite a few details of of the car, when we did a text check the last 4 digits of the vin differ by 1 number... and the vin starts with gc8, which seems wierd to me and is only 9 charachters long (the seller sent us a photo of the plate) could any one with a jap import shed some light....

cheers ...

Hi.

That is correct. gc8 and x6 numbers on jap chassis code

MattyB1983 01 August 2011 12:27 AM

Yep, as above. GC8 followed by 6 numbers on a classic import.
There will also be another code underneath the VIN which also begins 'GC8'.
That number can be used to verify the exact model as many early cars get dressed up to look like STI,s. And as a novice it can be very easy to get caught out.
If you want, stick this number up so one of the guru's can verify the model for you. It will begin GC8 and then have 4 digits.

rancid_ruby 01 August 2011 12:36 PM

thanks,

applied model: GC8C48D

Sounds like its just a standard WRX and not STI i could be wrong tho. A guru will be along shortly to verify this

rancid_ruby 01 August 2011 12:43 PM

how can you tell?? sorry new to this...

hpoolsteve 01 August 2011 12:46 PM

Each model of impreza has a unique model code like the one you posted i.e GC8C48D for a wrx or GC8C4ED for a 96 wrx sti and so on and so forth if you look here http://www.catherineandken.co.uk/sti/wrx.html you will get an idea

CREWJ 01 August 2011 12:47 PM

It's a manual WRX or WRX V-Limited. Not an STi.

MattyB1983 01 August 2011 01:00 PM

See what I mean. Many WRX's get dressed up and many many novices get caught out and pay over the odds for a WRX.

rancid_ruby 01 August 2011 01:05 PM

thanks guys, again me being naive.. i really should do more research on scoobys, whats an wrx v-limited??

WRX V-Limited Edition was introduced to celebrate the success of the Impreza WRC car in the FIA WRC. It was mechanically the same to the WRX but had a curb weight nudge to 1,240 kg (2,734 lb). The V-limited cars are painted in World Rally Blue.
