clocked doing 98mph on the motorway!!

I recieved the dreaded letter yesterday saying i was doing 98mph on the motorway asking for the details of who was driving at the time, gutted!! Any idea what the fine will be and how many points? Also i have heard of people just ignoring the letters and after 3'ish letters not hearing anything more about it as it cost to much for them to follow it up. Any one know about this?

I would imagine that at that speed it's a court appearance, and then likely 6 points and a few hundred £'s (depends on your finances and how much you need your car and current points etc). DO NOT IGNORE IT as it is not that serious IMO.

I was done doing a similar speed many years ago and I had 3 points and something like £150 fine. Like I said, it was a while ago.

What was that I read a few weeks back (totally from a bad memory) but the gist was no stop up to 85, and then no court upto upper 90's, but overall relaxing motorway limit reinforcement, and fines

Got done doing 105 on a dual carriageway, 7 day ban and £300 fine, that was a while ago now, think they have tightened up a bit now

fastmike 17 July 2011 07:14 PM

wasnt your mate..... (the one that went back to South Africa or Pakistan) driving at the time ?

guy at work was done for 73 on the motorway. my mate challanged it, and app the police in england have a new set of rules for the next few months, which means there isnt the 10% rule anymore.

tryin to find a link detailing exactly whats the crack

yellowsierra 17 July 2011 07:17 PM

Your lucky you were under a tonne. Like me i got caught doing 96 on the m20 a few years ago (more than 5) and got a £90 fine and 3 points
My mate got cought on a same motorway doing 115 and lost his licence for 3 months not long after me

We used to have a very friendly guy at work who used to drive all our cars and horror of horrors got caught speeding in every car he drove !!!!!
Being the nice guys that we were we used to pay his fines and he was fine about the points on his licence
Nice chap though
Regards
Ian

Say it wasnt you and some 1 has clonned your car and you are p;;;;;ed of as its happened with car parking tickets

Get an mot station to say you was there all day done ..

acstua 17 July 2011 07:23 PM

i thought the 10% rule was there as peoples speedos arent hugely accurate, then again its illegal for them to under read so i guess that would cancel that out :/
certainly interesting if they are now going for people just a few mph over the limit now :o

bonesetter 17 July 2011 07:23 PM

Saying it wasn't you, stating it was your Nigerian cousin here on holiday is inviting a whole world of pain. However, if it was someone else, you just give their details. They will pay the fine and take the points. Simple

So up to 79mph you should be just told off, 79-95mph is a fixed penalty and 96mph+ is a mandatory summons to appear in court. You should however be aware that some Police forces will every now and again run a zero tolerance scheme and then it gets a bit silly with people being prosecuted for 32mph in a 30mph zone. This kind of Policing tends dramatically reduce the support for the Police as the public generally see it as being OTT.

topman2180 17 July 2011 07:33 PM

Could also effect the car insurance if you get points.

Simonkn8574 17 July 2011 07:34 PM

In devon.and cornwall its points and fine up to 92. 93 to 100 mandatory court appearance Nd over a ton, mandatory fine. They still take job into account and balance fine against ban. Expect 3-6 points as a bare minimum.
just bare in
mind thatr if you cannot prove it was NOT you driving, they will award the points to the registered keeper anyway. Unless a photo is used in court to provide evidence that is beyond doubt its you! Just be careful of the nigerian brother solution ;-)

I got caught at 100 when i appeared in court i got 6point and a £200 fine

Simonkn8574 17 July 2011 07:43 PM

Just remember, each county has its own rules. if your county or force area is cracking down on driving incidents then youll get knicked at 75 and banned at 100. if your force area is heavy on knife crime or burglary then you might get a more lenient outcome...

Here's a possibly relevant story...

I was caught 56 in a 40 a few years back. Roadside advise was std 60 quid & 3pt's. I was going to Spain in the next fw days so produced and asked the Station lady what to do as I needed my licence to drive there. She said don't pay and send it back and you will have a court summons. Write a letter explaining why and it will would dealt with the same way...

What I was given was 5 pts and £300!

This is because the magistrates have discretion to give out whatever they feel fit, so anything betwen 3 and 6

sean95wrx 17 July 2011 07:46 PM

me and my missus are up in court next week, both of us were doing 92 and the copper is trying to screw us for racing.

What? No more producer's? I've been good for too long :)

Moley 17 July 2011 08:20 PM

I was caught doing 99mph on a motorway and had to go to court.

Got 4 points and a £100 fine.

Anything over 96mph on a motorway goes to court apparently.

i was done a lot of years ago doing 102mph...it was £60 fine and 3 points back then...probably your left testicle now!

Those were the days, got done for 84mph, 30mph limit, cost £60 , and 3 points, but it was 1984, had a:luxhello: r5 gordini turbo.

Simonkn8574 17 July 2011 09:55 PM

Yep no producers... cant fool the desk clerk any more..
The pnc police national computer is connected to MID motor insurance bureau, dvla and vosa. So can check MOT, Insurance and licence status instantly.
Only loophole is insurance. Get stopped with no insurance on a weekend (sunday to be safe) and they cant phone the insurance company to confirm MID info.. so if youre driving sans insurance, drive over the weekend.. you might get away with it...
