Tyres - duration change?

How long - time wise - do you think tyres should be left before changing?

Mine have seen 3 years of daily use and although they still have what looks like a fair amount of tread, I think they've gone a bit, well, stale...

Last month I used some 6 year old RE070's on a trackday at Cadwell and had no problems. They were dry stored in my shed for a few years before fitting. Sunlight will shorten a tyres life as it tends to dry them out and they crack.

If you are finding your tyres to be insufficient then get them changed - not worth having an accident!

Low miles, although I haven't held back :)

They're F1 GSD3's which are long standing favourites over a few Scooby ownerships. I don't think you can get them now

Depends on the brand; Pirelli for example (Rossos, Nero, P6000 etc) goes stale in less than three years; epsecially if the cars isn't garaged. Dunlop SP9000s aren't much behind. They are fine in teh dry, but simply stop gripping in teh wet or when its cold. Certain Bridgstone and Yokohamas suffer too. (RE050 and A680 IIRC)

Conti Sport contact 3s and Michelins (Pilots sports 2, Pirmacy HP, Primacy etc), seem to fare alot better. Plus they are better performing/quality tyres anyway IMO.

I guess I'm trying to convince myself to go out and buy a new set

Now comes the decision of what sort...:wonder:

Search for "which tyres" - there are loads of threads :)

It's the loads which I'm not looking forward to :)

Oh yes; just on case your tyre is old stock, take a looksy:

(love the comment on Toyos :lol1: ).

I can still gets some tyres that are supposed to be obsolete from some stockists; P6000s being one (don't use these in the wet if you know what's good for you ;) )

With the prospect of another 3 years partnership, I want to make sure the choice will make for happy relations :)

Good info on date stamping - thanks.

It will be an all round tyre I'll go for. Will have to spend a little time looking into what best suits :thumb:

On stamping yes. But what he wrote about tyle age is just bull****. Why is 2mths old tyre better than 8mths old? Is this like, bread? that you have to eat quickly before it gets stale? What's the difference whether you buy tyres that are 1 month or 1 year old? Or even 2-3 years old? They're still as good as new. On condition, of course, that they were properly stored.

So, if you have 3 year old tyres with at least 3-4mm of tread, you can run them for next few thousand miles :-)
