my neighbour has a pretty tidy 77 mexico in his garage: yep its nice, its history: but I cannot see its value beyond 5-10K perhaps.

Ah, If you remember them well then you will Know that "1800" Engine is a legend in being a BDA. Yes, There were either 13/1600 Sport or Later RS Mexico Shells but were a "Homologation Special" with only 109 road cars ever being built.
These are the most Desirable MK1 or 2 Escorts out there and thus, command a very, very high price.
Your valuations are about 10 years out of date as you can't even buy a basket case Genuine Mexico for 5k anymore. Top Mexico's will always change hands quickly again, due to their rarity with only 2400 ever being built and around 100 left.

The legendary RS1800 can and will always comand a high price and quite rightly so, and as for rarity....there is less than 20 in existance

I'm not sure about a fool and his money , I personally think it would be a wise investment .

I was looking at some old photos from an RS show at Donnington 1997 and noticed this RS 2000 HKL 917V for sale, the ad says:
1 previous owner, concours winner, all original panels for... £5000

Good investment eh!

well my annorak side is vw's, not Fords, so I'll bow to your knowledge !

had a quick scan on pistonheads and there are some seriously nice mk 1 and mk 2 'corts going for 10 or 15k.

whether or not that white ford was one of only 109, it still looks a feckin shed compared to the rest of them.

must admit my neighbour has fitted a modern cosworth block in his mexico, as lets be honest the 1600 or 1800 block is very under powered these days.

which is why I'm confused as to why the better powered and spec'd 'scorts aren't worth more

Lee.

Yup the BDA twin cam engine is a bit special...Unlike the RS2000 which is just a hum drum Pinto unit out of a MKII Transit/Cortina.

The MK2 RS1800 is just the Holy Grail for all MK2 Lovers. Enthusiasts will kill to own one hence the ridiculous prices. Even in the state it is in, It will still be a good investment.
"Most" RS Fans will want a standard car over a modified car therefore standard cars command a higher premium. What get's me though is when someone throws a YB Cosworth Engine into a bog MK1 or 2 and then thinks it's worth 15k + :cuckoo:
My MK2 RS Mexico in double Gold cup concours condition would probably fetch 18.5k + if offered for sale and would sell by word of mouth as most of them do these days.

ALi-B 01 July 2011 12:11 PM

Quite right; its the rarity of the mechanicals that makes in the RS1800 that makes it worth what it is if kept original.

Anyway 115bhp in a 800kg car isn't too shabby. Even by todays standards; That output is as good as a MKI focus 1.8, but in a shell thats more than 300kg lighter!

So underpowered is a bit far fetched. Sure its going to seem underpowered compared to a transplanted turbocharged lump, most stuff will.

rallycol 01 July 2011 12:26 PM

I always remember the Greek owner of a local chip shop turned up with his new car, an RS1800 ,he kept it a few years and changed it for a 2.8i Capri, bet he wishes he still had it.

Ricky 02 July 2011 10:56 AM

I know a guy who has an RS1800 BDA with 20 miles on the clock........ me now wonders what that would be worth ! LOL

J4CKO 02 July 2011 09:00 PM

Love the old Escorts but its got silly, 40 grand for a slightly rare but not that different version, jesus its got so silly ! why has the Capri not gone that daft as it was far better looking, even the RS 2600 is still half that price.

I reckon they have peaked, the guys that owned/coveted them when new are getting older and have more money but I think in a couple of years they will get (relatively) more affordable again.

dunx 05 July 2011 11:41 PM

As someone who was around at the time you have to remember that even a 115 bhp RS2000 was held in high regard, like an Ev* is today...

I was weird, and went looking for a 145 bhp SAAB turbo ! :lol1:

dunx

P.S. I'd have injection to liven that up... sorted !

J4CKO 10 July 2011 09:38 AM

On one hand I kind I can sort of understand it due to the rarity but that red RS1800 though very tidy just looks like any boggo mk2 Escort, I just cant get that excited about various plates having been welded on or different strut tops, certain vin numbers etc, to me they were just cheap, basic fun, they were all right but I dont get 100 grand for an Escort, for me they should be used and slid round roundabouts, think life is too short for polishing the underside of a car.
