Performance Jap 'automatic'

Chaps, I've got a very good friend who is in a wheelchair. He was involved in a serious accident a few years back and unfortunately damaged his spinal cord.
He was a passenger by the way.

Over the last few months he has seen me working on my car, adding bits, getting it mapped etc etc and has caught the bug. He wants a fast Jap car. Doesn't have to be a Subaru, he just wants something Jap and something very tunable. He wants something he can spend some money on, take it to meets and use on a warm Sunday afternoon.
The thing is it needs to be automatic. There is a system where a button is used instead of the clutch but he has used this system and just couldn't get on with it. He has always had auto's with hand control.
He drives a brand new X5 as his daily so isn't short of a bob or two but did say he didn't want to spend anymore than 15K. Obviously he will spend a fair bit modding it but wants to keep the first outlay under 15K if possible.

Has anybody got any ideas on what to buy. What's available as an auto ??

Cheers guys.

Mitsubishi made an automatic Evo VII if I recall correctly - think it was called the GT-A? Pretty much the same power as a normal Evo, maybe slightly less, but would certainly be tuneable.

In fact here's the address of the original Evo magazine review:

Hi matey i'm running 4EAT(which is autobox with paddle shift),but i would advise to you get JDM version of Subaru, these will hold more power(370-450bhp).

Also, just thought of the Supra - twin turbo 3.0L models with auto boxes aplenty on Pistonheads:

supra turbo insane specs for over 10 grand !!

Not a problem: The average Japanese driver is pretty poor at driving. Hence why many JDM cars are infact automatic.

So yes, there is a JDM Impreza automatic, Legacy and Forester...all with turbos

Looking elsewhere we have the Toyota Subaru twin turbo. They motor quite well. Can also be had in UK flavour too (rare though).

Not to forget various Skylines. R32, R33, R34 etc
