MD321T OR SC 46 BILLET ?????

Finally , ive nearly got all my parts together for my 2002 sti prodrive.

last thing to get is the turbo ,so its a toss up between the md321t and the new sc46 billet.

the md321t is a tried and tested turbo however the sc46 is getting some good reports also, although no back to back tests have been done that i know of between them on a 2.0 L car

the sc46 is reported to have earlier spool and make the same power as the md or even more in some instances.

also the md requires the bellhousing to be chisseled and ground whereas the sc is a true direct fit as far as i am aware.

the turbo will be getting fitted to my standard internal 02 sti with the following supporting mods

milltek turbo back 3 inch full decat
lateral wrapped tubular headers
fuellab mini 3 port
deatschwerks 650cc injectors
hybrid fmic
harvey smith uppipe.

this is an expensive component and just want the best performing one i can get.

i know there is Lateral guys on here and also scoobyclinic guys on here , irregardless , any input whatsoever would be very helpful

cheers

I've just made this decision and i've chosen the billet 46 as it does seem to make such good power with an earier spool although i think i read a billet MD may be in the pipe line?

Pramas 09 June 2011 10:53 AM

ive been looking at the same options, i think iam gonna go the sc46 route due to the billet spooling earlier, i have heard the md series is getting a billet version as well, will be interesting once out.
Also for the kinda of power its pushing out wont you need forged internals?

Grant Hay 09 June 2011 11:18 AM

the forged internals question is something i put a great deal of consideration into, however with so many people on here running newage 2.0l engines to 450bhp and even over 500 bhp as daily drivers, i made the desicion to run it and get cash together for a stroker 2.1 install.

i think i read on here that simon from jgm is running a md321v and more than 500 bhp on his standard engine blob and its his daily driver too, now thats impressive.

Spool on either can be helped with one of Harveys up pipes. Mine makes 1 Bar @ 3100 Rpm from memory on a 321T

Grant Hay 09 June 2011 11:22 AM

harveys up pipe is going to be fitted along with either the md or sc turbo as i have heard that it does really help the spool , especially on the 2.0l

what do you think of your T Bodski

B0DSKI 09 June 2011 11:32 AM

Love it M8. Pulls all the way up to the Redline. Could get a lot more out of it with higher boost. In conjunction with Harveys up pipe (and all the other mods) it actually fells LESS laggy than the VF35 did

Mind you I've not had my car for 3 months so I'm beginning to forget what it's like :(

On SC46 you can easily manage without the methanol 440-450BHP,on MD321T you will see with see 420-440bhp without the methanol, with methanol SC46 you should see 470bhp+,which you can hardly see on 321T.

About the spooling,SC46 is from reports very spooly turbo, which is suited very well 2.0 STi.

I disagree Jura - the T will consistently do the 450 with the right mods on the car, pretty much the same as the SC46. Spool wise there isnt a lot in it, if anything the T outspools the 46 but very marginal and without back to back on the same car it is difficult to say for definite.

Mapped lots of both and they are both very good reliable and consistent turbo options

Ran a rotated GT30R at 2 bar on a standard newage 2 litre for about 9 months, power wise it made 523bhp and apart from using a little oil towards the end it ran spot on :thumb:

i think a bit unfair to say neither made this or made that, both turbos are proven from what i have seen the md has been around longer however the sc series seems to be doing really well now and is becoming very popular. i think it comes down to choice from my point of view there isnt much difference performance wise, engine bulders and mappers would know a lot more however not sure if any of them would want to share that information :)

Decide who you want to map your car and then ask their advice . I am happy with my t .
One option might be to buy a used t and send it to Lateral for a billet wheel conversion , it costs around £350 and the turbo would come back as good as new so depending on the price of the used t this could be very cost effective.

Anger 10 June 2011 04:48 PM

Was always happy with my T's on my classic and then Newage STi, only reason i sold it was to move onto a V :)

H4RDY-P1 10 June 2011 08:31 PM

We could really do with a genuine propper back to back test to see the results, some one must have a donor car !!!!!!!.
