Rat in my kitchen!!
 

Saw a frickin rat running across my kitchen today!!:eek:

And before you say anything our house is very clean, especially the kitchen. Bins are all emptied on time and no food is left around. The only thing I can think of is that underneath the central island (and perhaps fridge freezer) is untiled floor, and the floor in the kitchen is a sub floor ie with loads of space underneath.

Anyway, what does one do about a rat these days? Mouse trap or poison etc?

Had an issue with a large mouse a few years ago, the mouse trap and the poison bought from Homebase or wherever were utter crap, he/she ate the lot and carried on as normal. Now the school caretaker had some quality stuff :), which you had to leave in the bag, not to touch at any cost (his words), next day bag gone mouse never seen again:D

I would strongly advise against using poison. The stink of a dead rat under your floor boards will haunt you for many a year.

I thought that modern mouse/rat poison actually dehydrated them and hence stopping the rotting smell?

Yes just buy a mouse or bigger rat trap and put some cheese ,chocolate or whatever in it
Snap bang and rat is dead

Instant death and cheaper too then poisen and you wont have the dead animal under your floorboards which will attract more of them

totally agree -- we had a dead rat under the floorboards of a ground floor flat we let few years ago (just after we had laid a new stone floor)

the smell was unbelievable, and took ages to go completely


they often get disturbed by building work btw - have you had any done recently?

use traps baited with chocolate - Mars Bars or something like that

they do get everywhere, i even work for one :lol1: :lol1:

If it were me I'd be onto the local council. They come out and put down baited traps that the rat dies inside. then they take it away.

You DO need to find out where it got in though, as it's buddies will for sure follow!

I saw a mouse in the kitchen here the other day, caught it the same night in a trap baited with chocolate, it looked at me very accusingly when I went to dispose of it:( Working behind the dishwasher, I found his nest in an old skirting board, removed the s/b and it was all but hollow, and pretty rotten.

a cat would not cut the mustard against a rat i am afraid

you would need a canine ratter -- like a Jack Russell

or failing that a Barn Owl -- they take out rats like a mother

Supposed to have been a big rise in rat numbers in the UK in recent years. The fact that councils only empty bins every 2 weeks doesn't help.

But it helps recycling! ;)

If there was no food it could get at you will probably not see it again. They do say that people in this country are never far from a rat anyway, you just only see them rarely.

Our cat will despatch the largest of rats instantly, he is very good at it and we don't see any rats any more now that they have got the message.

Sprinkle some flour or powder around possible entry points. Hopefully he will leave a trail.

I had problems with a squirrel getting into my kitchen, the flour took me to his method of entry which i promptly blocked up.

And mars bar is the best bait. They love chocolate.

Failing that, leave some bait, and sit in the kitchen with an air rifle. Thatll sort the bugger out.

We have a Terrier/Poodle cross, not sure whether he would shred it or surrender to it ?

a barn owl lol bit ott ay it just buy a big cat and not a small one lol or a pellet gun and do a steak out that would be funny just sitting in the dark all nite and the bugger doesnt cum 1-0 to the rat then lol sory shouldnt joke i hate the ratogans :lol1:

Disagree, As soon as a cat goes out side it ceases to be the little furry thing you call a pet and turns into a natural killer, I think 'most' cats would be more than capable of bringing down a fully grown rat.

Yup, I think the cat could do it. My border collie on the other hand would have just tried to round the bugger up! :lol1:

One of my mates tried to get one with an air rifle borrowed from another mate. he's obviously not a great shot because the rat lived to tell the "tail"!

Buy a cat and dog plus a gun and bullets or just whack it with the frying you might need to buy one of them
