personally i like the normal scoop, but each to their own

MattyB1983 03 June 2011 11:24 PM

I've got the same dilemma buddy. Don't want to buy one and end up not liking it, lol.
Decisions decisions.

I've brought the reverse scoop[RCM gobstopper style] with 22b vents off Catalunya172[Lee].
They will look sweet as when fitted:cool::luxhello:

mik 03 June 2011 11:39 PM

Why TF would you reverse the scoop?

an't disagree that they look good, but Harvey has done tests with both reverse scoops and replacing scoops with bonnet vents, and found INCREASED underbonnet temperatures!

And before anyone points at time-attack cars, his tests were done on a ROAD car.

I have FMIC and have left mine as standard.

Gambit 04 June 2011 10:45 AM

i think the reversed std scoop is too high in order to create the vortex that inturn creates the small vacuum that would suck hot air out of the engine bay. at that height it would just suck air from the area directly behind the scoop. plus scoop doesnt have a upswept lip that would create the vortex/vacuum

RS_Matt 04 June 2011 12:09 PM

Doesn't it pay to have cooling on the intercooler pipes running up to the inlet? How hot do those pipes get? I was thinking about this the other day and surely the lag and heat-soak counteracts the bigger intercooler?

I've got the same dilemma, I'd like to remove the 'air brake' but I'm sure it must also aid cooling to the gearbox

Is Harvey still ill he is not responding to enail

I have a reverse scoop on mine and have a FMIC

You dont need a std scoop if you have a fmic.

According to litchfields it helps cool the engine and does make a significant difference.

I track mine constantly so have the RCM reverse scoop (expensive but a quality bit of kit).

By how much were these temp increases and how were they measured????

Hi there these temps are measured via ACT gauge,i think Harvey selling these.

As above: I asked Harvey when I bought the FMIC, whether to fit a reverse scoop, or a set of louvres etc, and was told in no uncertain terms NOT to do so.

Knowing Harvey as I do, he would NOT make a comment like that without facts to back it up.

jh1 04 June 2011 10:09 PM

i assume a reverse scoop keeps th hole/vent in the bonnet so air will flow through the grill and out the reverse scoop.
surely a reverse scoop would be a lot more aerodynamic.
exta bonnet vents channeling air over intercooler pipes would help too

surely rcm wouldnt run one on the gostopper if this was the case j

Moley 04 June 2011 10:51 PM

I had a reverse scoop on my classic for a bit and definately noticed it ran hotter.
Changed back to a normal one after the bottom end went.

iam guessing for an everyday road car it wouldnt reach the speeds on a regular basis to make it worthwhile, i prefer the big scoop anyways :norty:

yellowsierra 04 June 2011 11:01 PM

Personaly, if i had a front mount i would go for either a painted or carbon scoopless bonnet
If however i was to run a reverse, then i would have to have a gauge or three in there or is that a bit chav. If so then ignor that and only read the first bit

imo a reverse scoop helps loads if your running a fmic,,,,i can see all the heat coming out of my reverse scoop instead of being forced back by incoming air,,,heat is better out than in imo,,,and i always got the feeling my old scoop was trying to lift my bonnet open at high speed and i dont get that now

the paint came off my old scoop aswell so it made my mind up to get the reverse one
