Anyone know anything about Metal Detectors?

Hi All,

A bit of a long shot, but my 7 yr old daughter (about to be 8!) is a budding archaelogist or something - she loves finding stuff.... she's deffo got a bit of klepto in there somewhere;)

We bought her a national geographic kids metal detector last birthday, which she loves, but it is *seriously* crap - i mean it would struggle to find a 50p chucked on the lawn.

She found a old shotgun cartridge last week whilst on a walk in the woods, you would think she'd found the Staffordshire Hoard - :D

But she loves playing with it, even if we have to 'seed' the area with 20p's ;) so we would like to buy her a decent beginners proper detector...

I have found a couple of models I reckon are suitable...

1 - Garrett 150 - about £130

2 - C-Scope Bill Wyman - about £120

Anybody else got any advice\tips...we would appreciate any advice:)

Also I have got the impression that metal detecting on a beach is unlimited, where as on land you MUST have the owners consent.....

We bought one from Maplins (can't remember which one, but it was about £50 10 years ago!) (list here: http://www.maplin.co.uk/search?criteria=metal+detector )

Found a few things, nothing of value. Was fun for a while and then my daughter got bored!

Heres your best resource. Some very interesting threads and stories on there too.

Use in cemeteries is considered poor taste.......

I was getting small screws and nails in my car tyres, from a piece of land at the side of my house - so figured that one of these detectors would cost a fraction of a tyre and bought one. Very surprised at how good it is! Years ago I had a basic CScope detector -and this £30 job is waaaaaaaaaaaay better.

I think your daughter would be very happy with this one for quite a long time. Not worth spending more unless adult and very serious IMHO.
