Impreza intercooler

I've been looking to replace my intercooler for a new top mounted one, in a few of these adverts they say Massive Power Gains Once Fitted – Up to 20BHP. Is this right or a load of turd?

Load of turd! What year of car do you have? Try and get a sti intercooler from a bug or blobeye as these are about the best i believe.

A 1998 impreza turbo mate

You won't see +20 bhp from swapping the topmount.
As above, go with an STI one.

Do you know what's involved with fitting? It's quite a PITA

chris84 27 May 2011 12:19 PM

just ordered an STI8 intercooler for my P1 from scoobyspares.

Howard at HDC is going to be fitting mine, should be no more than 4 hours work.

I seem to remember that you need to make sure you get the y pipe, the pipe on the front of the intercooler and the left side bracket if possible. howard will fabricate the right side bracket but i think i've seen someone selling a pre made bracket before.

sti8 intercoolers is much deeper that original one so the clutch reservoir needs cutting to make it lower, this applies to most aftermarket TMICs as well. STI8 TMICs are supposed to be good for upto 450bhp

you're in the midlands, get howard to do it for you. parts plus labour shouldn't be much over £300

what spec is your car? just upgrading the intercooler wont do much and isn't worth it. If your going down the map, turbo etc it route then front mount is the way to go.

chris84 27 May 2011 12:33 PM

it's personal preference really, some people like to have the front mount and all the pipe work that comes with it, others don't. a FMIC isn't really needed if you're not pushing the power too far.

i'm not upgrading mine because it will increase my cars performance. i'm upgrading mine because the existing one is restricting the performance. my turbo, injectors, induction kit etc... are all good for 360bhp but the classic tmic just doesn't cut it where as an STI8 tmic will.

The cars pretty much standard, got a full system to go on asap, manifold to back box, just thought before i do anything else i would upgarde the cooling system as worried bout blowing turbo/engine, plus standard one looks cack

tbh not worth the money it will cost you then, best off getting it mapped as is, then later on doing turbo, intercooler etc etc
