bugeye ppp kit - worth it ??

Guys car I am looking at just now a 51 plate bugeye is said to have a pro drive performance pack and dump valve fitted from new by subaru. okay appreciatte the PPP kit consists off the exhaust ( stainless ?? ) tweaked ecu etc just wonder what additional gain the kit gives in real life on this car over stock ???

also dump valve fitted from new by subaru, what dump valves did subaru themselves fit ??
car is totally standard apart from the above mods and being sold at a decent price, just not sure if to spend a little extra on the newer hawkeye version, was there much off a difference apart from front end shape etc ??

if your keeping as standard then YES
if you mod it then NO

jono300 18 May 2011 10:40 AM

Okay thanks, any idea on what extra BHP the kit gives ??

phil739 18 May 2011 11:05 AM

just to save tony from retyping it

quoted by him on another thread

There is an STI Prodrive but its a JDM car, production run of 1000 units of which 900 are blue and 100 are black, they also have a roof vent but are based on the standard STI chassis and not a Spec C's.
The STi type UK that was produced for the UK came in 2 different styles (note the style bit http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/sr...ilies/wink.gif) you have 750 none Prodrive Style cars and 750 Prodrive Style.
They are the same car except the Prodrive Style has the cosmetic changes (bumper/side skirts/spoiler etc) over the none Prodrive Style.
All these were 262bhp, the PPP pushed this up to 301bhp or 305ps, to confirm you can check with subaru UK if you take your chassis number and reg in, or there should be a certificate stating the date/reg/chassis number/mileage the package was fitted.

In answer to the OP's question...... £1600 to fit 10 years ago maybe adds £150 to the selling price today.

Okay cheers for that so even at 265BHP its still around 50BHP more than standard ??

anyone here driven one before / after having the kit fitted ?? just be interested to see what the real life on road improvment is actually like ??

I test drove a standard WRX and wasn't impressed at all - the Volvo T4 I had (still have) was more fun. Then I bought a WRX with PPP and the difference in performance was like night and day. Maybe not a patch on an STI, but lots and lots of fun.

Midlife...... 18 May 2011 07:27 PM

Having been around at the time of the launch of the bug I wondered about the PPP, the original was a daughter board and then moved to a re-mapped ECU (as well as the other bits). Rolling roads had the output usually from 245-260 but with better torque. I had an ecutec and mods on my TD04 WRX bug similar to a PPP and it was a lot better to drive.

The UK bug was seriously crippled performance wise so as not to tread on the toes of the UK STi so it came out of the box at 215PS............ woeful :(

At the same time the JDM bug was running a gentle 250 BHP with AVCS on the inlet side, but there again the JDM bug STi was a lot better than the UK bug STi.

I rolling roaded a 03' WRX PPP and it recorded 187 at the wheels. That's about 223bhp.

Subaru publish all their figures...........here's the one for the Blob TD04 WRX above

223 bhp on the wrx with ppp fitted / 215 bhp standard - 8bhp off a difference for £1600 - gulp ???

could there have been problems with the car to achive such a low figure or do you think this is more than norm ??

something wrong somehwhere ??!!

Midlife...... 18 May 2011 07:55 PM

223 BHP is, give or take, the output of the stock 03 Blob WRX. The Bug WRX was 215 PS and the Blob WRX came with about 10 more BHP.

Maybe somebody was misled into thinking they had a PPP when it was a stock model ?

We can't actually find the certificate but it was sold to us as a PPP by a reputable dealer and has the blue Prodrive Intercooler hose on it/removed centre cat. You never know though.

Midlife...... 18 May 2011 11:30 PM

Given that the UK WRX was pretty much shafted for the bug/blob version any PPP conversion in terms of performance / boost would be pretty obvious IMHO.

Usual story of the UK being landed with the dregs.........until I came across the Prodrive literature for the USA PPP where they had to take account of the conditions from the canadian wastelands to the heat of Death Valley..... For safety sake the PPP made feck all difference LOL
