Really Manchester is pretty good and Liverpool is much better than it used to be, but Liverpool does have some awful estates.

That's a rather one sided assessment. All places have ghettos and deprived areas.

When I was in Liverpool and Manchester centres I found both to be better than I expected.

They'll no doubt have bad estates, but as an example, Edinburgh is usually seen in a fairly positive light yet in fact has a couple of rough estates too.
