Have just ordered Pipex broadband, havent ordered and ADSL modem, anyone have any recommendations ?

I would like to be able to use two pc's off one line and modem, is this possible ?

It is possible if you network the two computers.

Put a network card in both PC's then use a twisted UTP to connect them.
Use internet connection sharing on the PC with the ADSL modem to share the connection with the other machine.

This method relys on the ADSL modem'd computer to be on all the time if the second PC is to browse the net.

If this is a problem buy a router.

Mark,

There was some talk here about ADSL modems http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/threa...threadid=87961

You'd be better off buying an ADSL Router and a small hub and then connect everything into the hub.....

Mark,

I'd second Jeff's comments. Also have a browse through the forums ADSL Guide to get some more real-life views.

With a router, you'll get some built-in protection with basic Firewall features. Much safer than using the cruddy Microsoft connection sharing software. IMHO, of course ;)

hanks for all the helpful info !

Have been offered an Alcatel "Frog" ADSL modem for £69, is it worth bothering with ?

Have heard they can cause problems.

The is a major difference between the performance of the USB modems and ADSL Routers. If your going to pay out £20+ a month anyway buy yourself a router and not a USB modem......trust me !

ADSL routers have much lower latency than USB devices (shorter ping times). A Router is much better at using the available bandwidth than the USB modems.

You can get more than 1 device on a router....
