Where to start tuning a Blobeye WRX
As the title suggest where should you start when it comes to tunning a standard blobeye WRX?
I have read a number of threads that include the following: decatting sti pink injectors VF30 turbo or better walbro fuel pump sti intercooler 3 port boost solenoid Brakes Drop links remap It all sounds straight forward but the problems is I cant afford the outlay of getting this work done in one go, so will need to plan out the work without having to do a remap 3x for each couple of mods or by worsening the performance by not remapping when adding mods, its all a bit chicken n' egg to me. Can anyone suggest a plan of attack? Thanks in advance |
Hi
I started on my hawkeye with: Decat 3" exhaust and k&n panel filter and remap. Made the car very nice to drive on the road with the td04 spoiling up very quickly. Hth Doug |
brakes first perhaps? dependson your driving style ;)
^ what he said would be good & the walbro i would have thought can go in at anytime |
Yeah get the walbro in at the same time cost me £40 to get fitted but I was getting turbo and intercooler fitted at the same time so wasn't to bothered. Hive heard it is easy enough to do yourself. There are a few companies on here that have good deals on brakes I would suggest to do them aswel.

I also started with a standard blob wrx, my first mods were a ninja 2 back box and green panel filter. I've moved on since then as you can imagine but I found this was a good place to start, got the nice rumble from the new box and improved air flow with the new filter. Its taken me a good while to get where it is now but the wait was well worth in imo. Good luck with it bud.

Thanks for the input I'm not impressed with the brakes on it so probably a good place to start,as boring as it sounds! If I can do the exhaust and filter without upsetting the ECU then that willfollow next. I would have just cracked on without much thought but I read somewherethat you actually hindered the performance if you didn’t get a remap after justthese two mods?? With a fair chunk of cash done in the rest of the parts I'll try and sourcesecond hand followed by a remap and a big smile I'm sure. Cheers |
You won't need a remap with just a new back box and panel filter bud. In fact you shouldn't need a remap until you start doing things like a full decat or bigger turbo & injectors iirc.

I went down this route with my 05 WRX PPP once the warranty was about to expire:
DBA discs, DS2500 pads, braided hoses, DOT 5.1 One month later 24mm rear ARB, solid droplinks 2 months later Milltek 3" decat system Walbro fuel pump Ecutek remap One month later Eibach lowering springs, fast road geometry setup 18 months later VF35 STI pinks Decattted up pipe Zen remap Car recently put on RR at 312.1 bhp 299 lb ft torque If I go for more BHP, next step will be the intercooler, but in all honesty, 312 is more than enough for the road for me. Take your time, but I would strongly advise brakes first........ |
Given the costs involved, sell it and buy an STI its a much better starting point.
No doubt not what you want to hear but it will save you more in the long run. |
Well it looks like brakes first and the clutch could do with doing soon which is a chunk of cash (+ fitting) i hadnt planned on spending so might as well do the flywheel and up-pipe.
Save, Save.... Exhaust from turbo back, Panel filter and Remap Save, Save, Save and some..... Turbo, STi TMIC, STi Pink and Remap Thanks for all the help and I will take another look at an STi but I'm sure there to much dosh. |
