Scooby Newbie looking at this car...

Hey guys, I'm currently a member on Civictype-r.co.uk

I have a 2002 Milano Red type R and looking to get a 2003ish (Blobeye shape), ever since a friend of mine got one and let me drive it, I must have one :D

I'm meeting up with a lad near me next weekend to take a look at his. Here's the link - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2566817.htm

If not this, I want a WRX with the STI kit on (as i dont like the look of the WRX but can't afford the STI)

Being a noob and knowing nothing about them, I'm looking for reliability and no expense spared with mods. What do people think, any help and i'll be very appreciative :thumb:

Well that's a bit of a bizarre situation.........all that kit and then it runs a piddly TD04 turbo at 265 BHP. It smacks of having run big power, then something has gone horribly wrong and it has been cobbled together for re-sale as, believe me, these things are a total money pit.

Personally I'd go for a more standard car :)

Shaun

PS the RR printout at higher BHP would have used a different turbo as the TD04 woulod never achieve that figure.

Arr cheers for the reply!

Here's one of his emails.

He had a lot of money and when looking through the history of the car you can see their was no expense spared when doing this car up.

He told me he loved doing project cars- buying standard motors and making them awesome. I went to see quite a few scoobies and most of them looked tired or things just didnt add up...little like the hondas you can tell a lot about them by little insignificant things like worn seats etc... I found this one and immediately fell in love with it! When i saw the mods it got me very excited! Here is the list as best as i can remember (as im at work n havent got service folder! lol!)

Large surface area Front mounted intercooler (black- really suits car)
Uprated fuel injectors (Sti OEM parts)
Full HKS exhaust system from Cat
Fully forged engine re-build 4 years ago - forged psitons, con rods, shells, bearings and crank
Uprated clutch (heavy duty - not sure make etc)
Uprated prodrive seats
Sti body kit (fron and rear bumper inc hks front splitter + srear sti high spoiler)
modified headlamp - unfortunately there isnt another one that comes with it...but ebay sell them all the time around £30 it just hasnt bothered me to change it. But it would need to be switched come MOT time.

Full re-map on TD04 turbo by David O'Brien and Pat Holborn at API engines to 1.2 bar boost making 265bhp.. I had a long discussion with David (owner) at API and he explained safe boost for any every day subaru is 1.2 boost regardless of turbo. Whilst on dyno he was very impressed on how this car had been put together, they said that the car had a lot more to give and found 260bhp easily! He said the only thing holding the car back was the small standard turbo. The guy who owned it before had taken the large turbo off and reduced power because his wife used to use the car before he sold it. Dont know how much you know about subaru but the TD04 turbo is a fast spooling turbo that doesnt have much turbo lag...the issues with the TD04 design is that it doesnt have much power after 5500rpm it kind of plateu's out..hence why you see so many scooby owners dropping TD05/06 and VF34/35 turbo's on their wrx's!! Which pushes them into 300-400 bhp...

This car used to run 320bhp and there is an old dyno sheet to prove. I understand you want to do mods yourself but the thing about subaru's is the mods are never ending...You can easily lose £10k in a standard scooby from scratch...This car has already had round 7-8k spent on her! The best thing about this car is its all ready for big boost...if thats what you want. It has all the engine set up ready for a bigger turbo and re-map. (depending on boost maybe a different clutch). The issues you get with a lot of scoobies is that they are modded by guys who cut corners! They just shove a great big turbo on wrx's and re-map them without changing engine internals and if you ask any subaru specialist garage they will tell you this and its an easy way to blow an engine.

Big Power

You have nailed it in one. That is exactly what a lot of members on this site have done.Slapped a big Turbo on their car had it remapped then Bang!

Midlife...... 02 May 2011 12:04 PM

You need to find out who owned it and did all the mods before the current owner......changed the turbo because of his wife ??? new one on me LOL

If David at API has had anything to do with it he might know something about the build etc.

Car recently had a re-map by Pat Holborn (Freelance Re-map Specialist- 3rd best in UK)

:lol1::lol1::lol1: I wish I had Pat's e-mail address... :lol1::lol1::lol1:

P.S. Given that you can have a high boost/low boost setting that's b0770cks... the wife drives it HA ! Be super-cautious that the gearbox isn't about to die, 320 bhp is enough to kill it.

deanb1980 02 May 2011 07:21 PM

i would buy a sti there going for around 6500 standard and then you have a better car as standard and then mod it yourself knowing everything that is wrong with and everything that has been done

Midlife...... 02 May 2011 07:36 PM

...........OP says he can't afford and STi.

Dean (notfub) is on the Wales Section. This car is very good and I have seen it regularly. :thumb: Mileage is high but it ticks the OPs boxes.

Can't see from that spec what turbo it's running (or I missed it) ......

Info like this is why I joined here, Thankyou :thumb:

I think I shall avoid cheers.

I am on the look for a decent one indeed. Thanks "The Trooper" but it has to be a Blobeye, as I cant look at the Bugeye for that long in fear of losing my lunch (no offense to anyone who owns one).

So now the search is on for a Blobeye, preferably in Blue (maybe black) with the STI exterior looks.

Unfortunately, being a peasant I cant afford the STI  but then I'm only buying it for the sound and the looks :o

So if you guys know of any good ones out there let me know, my budget is 6k or Swap / part ex for mine :thumb:

Thanks again!

Cheers buddy :) how have you found the fuel consumption compared to the EP3? (I may get bitten for asking an MPG question :norty:)

acstua 02 May 2011 09:50 PM

for me on the STI its been quite a bit worse than the pretty much std CTR
i average about 19mpg now and around 27 on long runs, but i dont go out of my way to do eco drives :) (heavy right foot but mostly 70-80mph on a long run)
Pretty sure i had a good 35 etc with the CTR on a similar trip to cornwall

then again the WRX are a bit better on mpg than the STI afaik
i reckon the WRX would be pretty similar to the CTR

chris wheela 02 May 2011 09:54 PM

Good to hear! I wouldn't mod the WRX much at all, probably an exhaust and maybe some kind of dump valve (shouldn't have said that should I haha)

But yeah, really got the urge for one now :)

acstua 02 May 2011 09:59 PM

aye i was worried id miss the fun revving engine and the fwd, quite possibly find the awd 'boring', but tbh i really dont :) the grip etc is just immense :D
i really need to release abit of burble now and then a cheeky remap :D

and lol aye dont mention DV's, hand bags at dawn otherwise :D

Save the etc pennies and buy a sti, buy the time you have messed around on the wrx the money could of got you a lot more for your money. 6 speed box, brembo brakes to name a couple. Hold out till you have the extra money for the sti

Save for the STI, standard turbo will take you to circa 330bhp, better suspension, gearbox and brakes out of the box. Standard internals can handle 400-450bhp without re-build.
