MOT due no Cat :(

My impreza is due its mot next week and have just noticed there is no cats on it at all. I have 2 cats which i had set by from some of my other imprezas but the exhaust set up looks different on the type r and dont think either of them will fit (Anyone know if they are different? dont want to strip it and find it wont fit).

Do they just go by emmisions since its an import or visually check for a cat?

Cheers

Petersti 29 April 2011 06:21 PM

The Hotter the better. Simples :D :D :D

JonMc 29 April 2011 06:44 PM

That's normally only the case with a sports cat as it is at its most efficient when up to temperature:thumb:

Last time I had my old WRX mot'd the tester said it didn't need a cat as it was an import and cross referrenced the chassis number in some book he had to confirm, In this case it is tested as not having a cat which allows higher emmisions, Not sure if this has changed though as I sold my last 2 Impreza's before the mot was due :thumb:

Yeah i heard the hotter the better lol
What are the chances of emmisions being low enough to pass without any cats lol :)

It says this on dft's website so assuming your car is older than 10 years it still does not need a cat fitted :thumb:
If the car has not been built to British or European standards, and it is less than 10 years old, it must be submitted for the Single Vehicle Approval (SVA) test run by the Vehicle & Operator Services Agency

Here is the link http://www.dft.gov.uk/vca/other/faqs...le-importi.asp

scoobybaz64 29 April 2011 09:20 PM

this is what vosa told me
a vehicle first used between 1st august 1992 and 31 st july 1995 would need to have a cat emissions test if an exact match for the vehicle details could be found either in the emissions analyser database or the current edition of the in service exhaust emissions book

however an imported vehicle would not be deemed as an exact match in this context, and therefore a non-cat emissions test would be required
hope this helps baz

:thumb:Nice one will print this for a back up lol.

Its a 97 Type R STI btw

May try that Rob :thumb:(Nearest is 30 miles away tho)

Im sure they will pass it :nono: with all my ammo ie donuts and print offs :lol1:

im not convinced by any of this,im led to believe that all car after 1993 require a cat.:wonder:
i can see if you were to take a 93 or after sti type r to any random mot station without a cat it would defo fail emmisions.

scoobybaz64 29 April 2011 11:10 PM

what i posted up is an email reply from vosa after i had a disagreement with my mot tester email vosa yourself at (enquiries@vosa.gov.uk)there is no exact match for an early import

so are you saying that if i took my fully decatted 98 sti type r to any random mot station it would pass its mot?
maybe im wrong but i would put money on the fact they would fail it and tell me that i need to have a cat installed for the emmisions test!
it would certainly benefit me if this was the case but just cant see it mate.:wonder:

We have a friendly MOT centre near us. call up, mention it is me and its a scoob with no cats. He does all the checks as standard and then *seems to be busy* at the emissions part :D

Any car built in the Uk or europe not an import, Import's do not require a cat if they are more than 10 years old, I have been told this by an Mot tester who tested my car and just recently due to this thead found it on dft's website, You should ask your tester if he knows about this, Although if he thinks your telling him how to do his job it will probabaly fail on more than the emmisions :thumb:

i hope thats the case as its a godsend loophole!
hassle free at mot time?surely not?
where did you find this out?:)

on an mot I had about 2 years I told the tester I had no cats and would it be a problem and he said no, He looked it up in some book he had and said the chassis number doesn't match so it's not required, I should of took more notice of what he was saying but that was definately the case http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/sr...lies/thumb.gif There is some info on the Department of transports website, I posted a link further up this thread somewhere, I only looked it up due to reading this thread as I was curious due to needing an mot soon :D

yeah,my engines being rebuilt at the moment and will be back in the car soon,i was in 2 minds wether to fit the decat downpipe(i want to as its being mapped)but with mot due in august i didnt want to have to swap back to the original cat about 6 weeks later.seems alot of hassle to do this for mot as i would swap it back the next day!:brickwall

P1Drifter 30 April 2011 01:01 PM

think this is still relevant
http://www.type-ra.co.uk/images/emissions.gif

99greenwagon 30 April 2011 01:40 PM

so it does need a cat!

BLACK V5 30 April 2011 01:58 PM

I think its only pre 95 imports that can get away without a cat. My my99 always has a cat test and thats done by a subaru dealer/importer so they should know what there on about. There should be no way a my95 car on will pass without a cat.
