AIR CON PUMP REMOVAL IS IT BETTER THE ENGINE?

As title, i dont use my air con and im not planning to. Is it better for the engine if i take it off all together? Any benifits? its a my95 wrx import. any imput would be great thanks:thumb:

anybody?

CREWJ 28 April 2011 08:36 AM

In a word yes but the gains would be so small that you'd barely notice it. When it's off it is only drawing enough power to turn a bearing, which you can freely spin with your little finger. It only really effects performance when you turn it on and it engages with the pump.

Biggest difference it will make is the weight.

blackcountryboy 28 April 2011 09:54 AM

thanks lads

Carlh 29 April 2011 07:58 AM

How much weight does it carry? Id prefer to open a window if im that hot anyway. Long as the heaters work in the winter....

ScoobyDoo69 29 April 2011 09:01 AM

I think I read it's about 20-30kg?

Carlh 29 April 2011 12:42 PM

Wow. I wonder how much my spare wheel weighs, I bet thats about 10-12kgs with the brace and bits. Better MPG, better WHP. Would be interesting reading if someone weighed and stripped a scoob and noted all the weights down, monitored MPG and performance differences.

ScoobyDoo69 29 April 2011 01:01 PM

I wouldn't say better WHP as you're not changing the power from the engine or at the wheels :p

Better power to weight ratio you would have though yes :) Which means faster, and better MPGzzzz.

blackcountryboy 29 April 2011 03:02 PM

think im going to strip it all out tomorrow so i will weigh the unit and let you know

ScoobyDoo69 29 April 2011 03:12 PM

Legally you have to have the air con gas drained by a professional mate. Just so you know...

Pyrotechnic 29 April 2011 09:53 PM

Mate of mine stripped his Scoob, managed to knock the grand total of 0.1 of a second off his 1/4 mile time ;]

Lagamorph 01 May 2011 09:11 AM

I really wouldn't bother unless your stripping everything ie. sound proofing, rear seats etc. Just have a big poo in the morning, that would probably suffice ;)

OcTag3n 01 May 2011 10:18 AM

Wow! A 20-30kg poo would make your eyes water!

Lagamorph 01 May 2011 07:02 PM

You obviously haven't been to any balti houses in the Lye area :D
