Twin scroll 6 speed in a classic - how easy...?

...or rather how expensive?

After looking around for a bigger powered classic I'm beginning to think why not just go with what I have (Classic STI wagon)...

Now if this is too pie in the sky I would like to know from the off, otherwise I'm willing to go for it. I would like ~350 (to 380max) bhp and possibly twin scroll turbo. I'm thinking 6 speed is essential, so needs factoring in.

How much would this little shopping list entail? I would also need brake & suspension upgrades

My wagon at present is only worth max £3K, but was considering splashing ~£7-9K on a classic (another 6). It's a shame in a way as I have refurbed this engine & 'box...

Thanks for any advise, appreciated :thumb:

what mods have you got on the wagon at the moment ???

stu

£2000-£2500 just for the 6 speed. Twin scroll is going to be at least £1500 for the Turbo, sump up pipe etc etc

Also factor in a possible new clutch and lightened fly wheel,

And without knowing your current mods maybe a full decay, fmic, induction kit, injectors then the remap. Your 6k won't go far, then as you have not done your suspension or brakes as you mention it then that could be another 1.5k depending on what you go for.

Might be easier and cheaper to buy one already done. Although finding a wagon will be hard.

Exhaust and ported headers, thats it...

B0DSKI 27 April 2011 09:41 AM

NO cheap way of doing a high powered classic

bonesetter 27 April 2011 09:48 AM

Could an option be finding a donor, maybe a new age JDM 6 speed?

B0DSKI 27 April 2011 09:59 AM

That'd always be the way to go IMO.

EddScott 27 April 2011 10:11 AM

Do you have to have big power?

As someone above points out theres more than just a tasty engine to think about. IMO, you'd have a more well rounded car spending the £6K in the 3 main areas - engine, suspension and brakes.

I'd rather have a classic running about 340 ish with a chassis set up that can really use that 340 rather than 400+ on standard brakes and 12 year old shocks :D

alcazar 27 April 2011 10:15 AM

With the 2.0 turbo engine, afaik, you don't NEED to go 6-speed until you hit 400 ft lbs of torque. Remember, it's TORQUE that kills the transmission, not power;) I DID fit a 6-speed, but only because I was advised so to do when I went forged 2.5litre.

And you could achieve the 350-380 WITHOUT a twin-scroll turbo. I'm pretty sure an MD321H would do it?

Best to talk to some respected tuners on here: Harvey Smith, David at API, Allan Jeffery at Engine Tuner, amongst others.

Any of those three will put you right without taking money off you that you don't NEED to spend.

And that, of course, is the rub.

My engine mods didn't start apart form a back-box until I'd got bigger brakes, which meant bigger wheels, and done the suspension mods, at least the basic ones.;)

^^^^^^^^ AGREED.
You'll have more fun in a well set up 340bhp car than a 400 one on crap brakes and suspension. Personally, these are the two areas that need addressing first, power comes after.

Anything over 300/300 in a V2 STi with the B4AA box is gonna be stripping gears whether you realise it or not ;)

320/320 @1.3 bar lasted about 2k miles, fit and forget the 6speed IMO. No way you can ride 3rd into corners and full beans out into 4th for very long with the early 752 box.:) Get a donor JDM is the best idea as you can rape it for the good bits and break the rest :)

MattyB1983 27 April 2011 10:39 AM

Or go with a 754 box like I have. Stronger than 752 and much much cheaper than a 6 speed.

chris_wrx 27 April 2011 10:50 AM

Been there done it i payed 1800 for box 350 for sump downpipe headers and up pipe 400 for turbo plus gakets and oil and filter100 plus mapping my turbo is available if you do go down this route

I have broken 3 TYN54's at under 300 lbs/ft...v5sti\6sti\P1 boxes are very nice and quite a bit stronger.

MattyB1983 27 April 2011 11:51 AM

For where your going I wouldn't worry about 6 speed. Go with a STI 5,6 or P1 box. Be good for 400 and save you a small fortune. The money saved would get you some decent second hand brakes and suspension goodies.

bonesetter 27 April 2011 12:24 PM

Thanks for all the advice guys :thumb:

I'm going to give David @ API a ring.

If the money is a factor then I suppose its a matter of what's worth more - my tuned wagon, or a tasty Type R or P1 someone has done. If I plough money into either option how much will disappear? I think we all know the answer to that...

53 27 April 2011 12:40 PM

Your p1ssing money away you'll never see again on something worth about the same as a 5 year old Ford KA. :)

However, my view is simple, if you love the car getting the goodies the smile will be immense nothing else matters. You're investing in your wellbeing ;) not in damage limitation come resale. My wagon is by far the best car I have driven for handling and fun factor, even more so than the classic saloons I've driven :) When the wagon rots beyond repair or dies on it's side ;) all the goodies will be lifted into another awesome wagon ;) nothing is wasted as I never intend selling. :)

what Stu said...assume you will get nowt back and enjoy driving the thing :)

Guv 27 April 2011 12:53 PM

You have also forgotten about VVT heads on a spec c engine which allows the quick spool of the twin scroll.......

new ecu required in a classic; Syvecs, Motec or Hydra like mine :D

Ian 27 April 2011 03:55 PM

im running around 450 bhp and 400 lbft through my standard v6 sti box so far so good (fingers crossed/touch wood etc etc)

:)

bonesetter 27 April 2011 05:20 PM

After speaking to a couple of builders I've come back down to earth (somewhat).

Here's a summary:

Twin scroll is costly - sump, headers, piping + turbo. Is it worth it...?

360bhp will give a nice to drive power output and an amount I would be happy with. Wringing the engine's neck and trying for much more will involve a set of rods (~£1K or so) and then there's the 'box to consider. With what I've got, 360 can be achieved with a fuel pump, VF34, later type bigger TMIC, filter kit & then Simtec plus map. This should come out £2.5K +VAT. Con rods & twin scroll will see £4K + VAT

BC coilovers 600
Brembos, bigger dia wheels & tyres 1300

Gearbox had a refurb 12 months ago, so leave that until something happens

trails 27 April 2011 06:22 PM

18g is a lovely turbo at that power level, something to consider especially when I believe Mr Forrest is now selling billet variants ;)
