Newbie to the Scooby!
Hi
Newbie to here and hopefully a Scooby if i can be persuaded ;) Not new to performance motoring tho... Currently have an 07 Ford Focus ST-3 running 280bhp, a serioulsy modded Fiesta RS turbo, running 1.8 ZVH engine and 200BHP!.... and in the past had various fast motors Im selling the Focus (or trying to) and im torn between two cars to replace it... Either an Escort Cosworth (If i can find one at the right price!) or im tempted by a scooby! I joined SN to get some advice and maybe some inspiration about the Scooby.... Ive been scouring the popular internet sites... Ebay.... pistonheads etcetcetc and it seems that theres plenty of Scooby's out there, for a fairly decent price considering theyre mileages! Can anyone give some words of advice as to what to look for in a 2nd hand Scoob? Ive been a mechanic for 20years now, so not totally green when it comes to motors, so some of the obvious things I could already spot, but there is always good advice from these forums, as i found with the Focus STOC and the RSOC forums..... So...... your advice and information is grealty received and appreciated! Many thanks in advance! John (Brighton, East Sussex) |
If your thinking about getting a scooby make sure its an sti and not a wrx. If your getting a classic one make sure its a 2 door type r (im biassed). Obviously newage impreza's are a lot cleaner inside but dont feel as good as a classic does to drive as many members will tell you but many prefer the classic look to the newage. Classic imprezas are known for bottom ends knocking but if treated correctly can be a brilliant engine. Listen for knocking rear struts as these are a common problem.

Welcome mate
Any idea of which model/year you are after. plenty of knowledgeable people on here. |
Hi guys...
Im watching a few on ebay at the moment! But these two seem to stick out! I love the look of the black one + its a newer car... But the blue one has the rally graphics that i like too..... If i can sell the Focus for what i want for it I will have about 9K to spend... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT |
Rally graphics are a no no!! They are both overpriced too. you can pick a blobeye up (which both of them are) for 7.5k.
|
Why a no-no on the Rally Graphics?
|
It's personal opinion to be honest i think there terrible & chavvy but some people will disagree mate it's your choice. Have you not though about a classic impreza like 2000 reg

Let's bring some common sense to your search - follow my advice and you will get a winner.
1. Buy only a UK car. No need to settle for an Import in this day and age! 2. Avoid any Modded Tat. 3. One owner and a mature one at that is high up my list of must haves. 4. Full Service History - Subaru for the first 5 years - fully documented after that. 5. ALL old MOT's available. 6. Do NOT buy a cheap one! Follow the above and you are as assured as you can be of securing a good one. |
|
Ye thats more like it. You will pay a little bit more for a PPP one. Think there 305bhp instead of the 265bhp.

With 2 owners, well, it gets harder to believe. With a multitude it IS unbelievable ... anyone who thinks otherwise is waiting to get their trousers pulled down! |
Unfortunaley my Focus has had 3 previous owners before me and its only done 34000 genuine miles!
Maybe i should undo my belt now ready to have my trousers pulled down! lmao |

No-one wants these cars, make sure you get a bargain as you will be giving it away for pennies when you come to sell ... good luck, let us know how you get on! |
Ok so all the other cars the garage have for sale are right offs, stolen recovered etc etc your full of crap get off this thread tadaaaaaaaaa

I might have a spin past that merc dealer soon and have a peek at the scoob theyve got, theyve taken it in PX on a merc or porsche , so they must have a bit of margin in it that i could bargain with! I rekon if i offered 6.5K and went from there i dont think id be too far from the mark!

If you're going to offer £6500 then I would undo your belt now ............... they cannot sell these cars at the moment - go in at £5750 and walk away!!
They will call you back ..... if they don't, you can always go back. He who holds the money calls the shots - god, no wonder we are in rip-off britain ..... so many gullibles waiting to be shafted. Never mind, all the more for me :D |
Okies...... Well I'll try and see what happens! Seems a lot of motor for not much money, Am i right to avoid the 2.5 version? Higher tax bands and engine probs from reading another post???
|
The one you are looking at is a wrx not an sti so its still expensive
|
go for a newage sti 05 plate. It will be a blobeye(same as the first two links you posted)which is a nice looking car, will have a greater spec over the older models, dccd(diff contol), nicer dash and steering wheel, bigger hubs, wider track etc. the 05 plate blobeye has the 2.0 litre engine which is one of the strongest subaru engines available.
|
I agree with you Taz. Think i might go for one next when i sell the type r.
|
Ok so ive seen a 2002 wrx sti PRODRIVE in kent for 7290 gbp... What exactly does the prodrive upgrade involve? I realise it gives you higher BHP.... 260 instead of 240? am i right? Sorry to ask so many questions but i really know nothing about the in's and out's of these cars!
|
Imprezas will depreciate away to nothing, are common as, and nobody takes a second look these days.
Escort Cosworths will have virtually no depreciation if looked after. I cant remember the last time I saw one and they always turn heads. If you're weighing them up, its up to you... Why do I have an Impreza :wonder::Suspiciou |
O ye i forgot about the escort cossie. Why are you even on this forum johnny5 go buy a cossie!!!!!!!
|
Yeah guys.... Ive always wanted the escos, but its finding one thats a reasonable price! Most are seriously molested and/or heavily modified and theyre still asking 15000 quid for them.... I have seen a "standard" or so they say standard 1994 L reg big turbo escos for 10995! But it seems too cheap for 75000miles and 2 owners from new! comparing it to the others out there, theres only 8 at the moment on ebay and even less on autotrader, so i think the scooby maybe a more viable choice????
|
and what sort for escort cossie is he going to get for 7-9k:lol1: and in standard form are dog siht (had one) is your next car going to be your daily drive? if so stick with your focus:thumb:
|
Go for the scoob mate there much newer car.Thats why im after one got to be a classic though mate.
