Folks,

Having a hunt around for my next motor.
Has anyone owned a Merc SLK230 ?

What are they like. Practicallity...performance...reliability ? The sales guy at the Merc garage said I'd be bored with it after a week http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif (Honest I suppose)

Was really nice though. Well built and a completely different style of car to the Scoob.

Opinions please !

Mark

Are you really a 40 Something housewife?? http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif it's just this car seems to be always driven by one.

Also are we talking brank new SLK or an older one?? The reason I ask is that the older ones were all automatic.

JD,

Nah...just a little fed up with the Scoob. Maybe its just a wee downer....
ANOTHER blown turbo...becoming dis-illusioned. Hopefuly should get it back on Thursday so my faith might get re-instated (hope so)

Even the salesman said don't do it http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

Guess he's right....

My question is what do you go from a modified 94 UK Scoob to ?

Apart from the almost obligitory Beemer 330D http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

surely any self-respecting dealer won't sell you one unless you can prove you're a hairdresser ;-)

My brother has one.
I found it a bit dull, no, make that very dull to drive.
It's ok though, fast enough and the roof is a nice party trick.
Supercharger is nice and smooth, no shove in the back.

Seems extremely prone to stonechips though (nothing new there then).

Didn't turn up with brush and curlers in tow.

Just confirmed what I thought. He said I'll be bored of it in a week. Lacking in power, but handled well aparently.

Sadly girlfriend loved it...

So far my score is Subaru 1000000000 Merc 0
and that included serious deductions for Subaru failing.....

These are personal opinions having driven my brothers one quite a bit (until he trashed it http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/rolleyes.gif ).....

Nice build quality (well it is a merc) but dog slow and unresponsive is the best way to describe the 230. The steering is ****e and the driving position is like an MG midget (feet well up in the footwell and the steering wheel on your nose). The trim can also be a bit dodgy (my brothers car was silver with bright red leather interior http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/eek.gif ). The other point is if you have the roof down and a passenger, forget luggage. If you have the roof up you can take a toothbrush http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif. You can find them a bit claustrophobic too with the roof up.

Nice looking car, great pose (if you're a hairdresser http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif ) but you will be bored within a few hours, especially after owning a scoob.

Oh, a final thing. My brother aquaplaned it on a bend in the M27 motorway at 65 mph. It hit the central reservation backwards and shortened the car by 2 feet. He was perfectly OK but the car was written off because of the damage to the roof mechanism. If you get one don't have a rear end accident.

Like I said, personal opinion so no flaming!!!

Didn't drive it so can't comment on steering, but all the above observations seemed true.

The Scoobs back on Thursday so I'll see if it still does it for me http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

(Guarenteed to be honest)

The only person i know who owned one only kept it for a few weeks before getting bored and buying a Honda NSX. Even his girlfriend kept telling him that it was a girls car and he should not drive it. (Although it is worth noting he gave it to her in the end)

Hmm perhaps she had a hidden agenda...
Coincudently my nearby neighbour has an SLK, but got bored and bought an NSX as well...(kept the SLK as well though)

Um maybe not a coincidense, is the SLK silver and the NSX red? (I'm in herts as well

Matches so far, if the guy had a blue TVR Cerbera before both of these cars then I may live pretty close by!

I thought it was purple but I am colour blind!!
Great Ashby it is then! Road with the mud and the residents complaining

Seen/heard any loud blue Elises around by any chance?

In fact, you don't happen to have a Mica-Blue Impreza do you? X-reg? If so then it's partly your fault that I'm currently waiting for mine!!
