Goddamn Subarus!!

Well, after the drama I had getting my new mods fitted before my mapping session yesterday it just gets worse! The FMiC pipework wouldn't fit properly, then My car blew a fuse at midnight Saturday after I put my main beams on, leaving me, the mrs and little un stranded for over an hour and then....

Turned up at EngineTuner yesterday morning, ready to get my new injectors fitted and SimTek fitted and mapped, when Martyn started having a problem controlling the revs! Tried a couple of other idle control valves and it turned out the ECU was faulty :(

Martyn packed my SimTek up to send off to get repaired and he very kindly fitted the SimTek off his own car and do a base map for me to get around on for the next few days. Mapping went absolutely fine, no problems at all, he then took it on a road test. He didn't even get a couple of miles down the road and the engine started knocking

It was running 270bhp so nowhere near what it was before!! To say I'm gutted is an understatement, we're stuck in Cornwall unless we get it recovered back home!! Alan Jeffery very kindly lent us his Pajero until the weekend so we can finish our holiday!

Don't know what to do!!! I've had enough now!!!

Black-Hawk 19 April 2011 02:38 PM

UN-beleivable Merv, gutted for you mate.

Cannon Fodder 19 April 2011 03:13 PM

Sorry to hear of your problems Merv, you've had a real bad run of luck in a very short space of time. :(

Don't get too down, after all it's 'only' a lump of metal; as much as we love our cars and get obsessive about them they are a money pit and in reality a complete waste of our hard earned :brickwallbut they can also be a real pleasure when you are on an open road out in Mid Wales giving it the beans.

Good luck and if I can help then please let me know. :)

mervil 19 April 2011 03:38 PM

Cheers guys!! I've decided to break it and leave Subaru for good! As soon as I get it home I'll be putting a for sale thread up and listing everything!

Cheers :thumb:

stonejedi 19 April 2011 03:40 PM

im sorry for you bruv ive been there i know just how you feel.:(

The Sheep Worrier 19 April 2011 03:47 PM

no way merv please do not break it mate, stick with it i know its easy to say but if it comes to it possibly park it up for a month or two until u make a decision dont do anything rash. Really sorry to hear about your trouble, i too know unfortunately how much they can really piss u off when they aint right. good luck mate i really hope it works out for you, its such a lovely car and will be crimminal to break it, i really believe in probably quite a few years from now but one day the Classic Impreza really will be a classic, they're getting less on the road and finding a good one soon will be a tough job.
All the best mate,
Rob

+1 keep the faith.

DYL 4N 19 April 2011 04:03 PM

Are you sure you have thought about this??

Consider the options, be a shame to break it.

Daz187 19 April 2011 05:48 PM

Gutted for you mate, Really sorry you had issues with the ecu. My car was running fine, so not sure whats happened there..
As you know i was in a similar position. These engines just seem dodgy i'm afraid, Yours aint the first and certainly wont be the last to go. Just depends how much money it takes with it.
After stripping mine down and listening to John they seem to come with some faults.

Cannon Fodder 19 April 2011 05:52 PM

Merv, as others have said when you get the car back just sit back for a while and have a think about what you wanted to do with the car.

It is very easy to make rash decisions based upon being p1$$ed off when something goes seriously wrong with a car. :brickwall

The Stitcher 19 April 2011 06:19 PM

Sorry to here your bad luck mate and I think the more you play about with subaru's the more they break, and if you do break it it's a long process and people will mess you about as I have found out, all the best in what you do fella and hope to see you around soon

bluerigster 19 April 2011 07:32 PM

Sorry to hear about your car troubles Merv:( Tuning any car is a gamble that sometimes doesn't pay off, but a rebuild engine should restore faith in the car and at least you will know the engines history.:thumb:

DannyBoy007 19 April 2011 08:12 PM

sad news, but onwards and upwards

First dibbs on the boot and spoiler if you decide to break

simb 2 19 April 2011 08:15 PM

Merv, i'm gutted for you mate, I know to well the feeling your having now. Took me a month after my big ends went to decide what to do and I think theres some good advice by not making any rash decisions mate. Get it home in the garage and think it over!

Did much research when deciding which route to go down and after speaking to many tuners I realised how common and issue was, I think most classic STi engines are on borrowed time unless you drive it like your grandad!

Hope you find a finicially viable soloution to keep it, as once you have an engine thats been built for what its intended you will love it!:thumb:

Martin 2010 19 April 2011 08:55 PM

gutting news mate

"Taylor" 19 April 2011 09:13 PM

Gutted for you Merv, as you know I've been there with engine probs, as has been said, have 5 and mull it over. If you do decide to break, I'd be interested in the 550s.

KJD Mk1 19 April 2011 09:26 PM

Totally gutted for you Merv :-(
Throw a sheet over it and ponder for a while buddy.

S3LDM 19 April 2011 09:29 PM

Rally fan 555 19 April 2011 10:54 PM

Sorry to see this Merv - I hope you get something sorted soon ;)

ryan33hks 19 April 2011 11:01 PM

OMG what a nightmare mate, don't break it though. Get it fixed properly for as cheap as possible and enjoy it again. Give me a shout if i can lend a hand doing anything

mervil 19 April 2011 11:35 PM

Cheers for all your comments guys, if I'm honest I don't think I'd feel completely confident in a rebuilt standard engine! As said above and what Martyn and Alan told me, the V4-6 engines aren't very good, I suppose it was inevitable it was gonna happen! Rebuilding it cheaply then keeping it isn't an option, if I get it rebuilt to keep then I'll go 2.1 but just can't afford it until after I get married!

I've got the supporting mods good enough for 400bhp but just got a shoite block and internals! I knew it gonna let go but not this soon :( especially when it was detuned!!

Me and the mrs need two cars as when she's in work I still need transport so can't have a car off the road for any length of time!

I'm stuck in a rut now!!

prodriverules 20 April 2011 12:16 AM

Would you sell it as it stands Merv?
Give me a PM if your interested mate:thumb:

The Trooper 1815 20 April 2011 10:36 AM

Merv, go £400 banger for a while. Loads about with a ticket and MOT.

Join the 3 ring circus (engagement ring, wedding ring and suffering) then go from there. Mine as been an absolute bonus and I really appreciate the Scoob when I drive it now.

R1CH D 20 April 2011 11:30 AM

Gutted for you merv, have a think before you get rid.

wrx287 20 April 2011 12:01 PM

I'll meet you somewhere with matches and you bring the petrol and we'll have a bonfire mate. Mine and yours can go together then:brickwall

Gutted for you mate. Im about the stage you are now aswell.:(

mervil 20 April 2011 03:29 PM

:lol1: that's a good offer dude!

I've been talking it over with the other 'alf and we've (she's) decided that it's better to get it home and park it up with the expensive car cover over it that we've not used yet :lol1: I'm gonna do all the little bits that need doing over the next year or so then get the engine rebuilt eventually!

Thanks for everyone's advice as it's reading the stuff on here an Facebook that has made our minds up! I know it was a rash decision to just break it but that seemed like the best idea! It will be back bigger, better and immaculate  just not this year :(

muttley1927 20 April 2011 03:49 PM

Merv,gutted for you,

Glad you've had a re-think about it.:luxhello:

If you need any help at all with work on it give us a shout,i'll be happy to help and i'm pretty handy with a spanner.:norty:

Tea and coffee is the only payment i'll need.:thumb:
