head gasket
hi guys
my engine is being rebuilt on monday :thumb::thumb::thumb: ive missed it so much. life hasnt been the same :luvlove: just wondered, what are the key points i should be able to recongise or should ensure that are done... the heads are being skimmed no matter what, new modine... any other info would be appreciated. by those with the - 'been there done that' :notworthy:notworthy:notworthy V4 STI by the way |
full rebuild or top end? what is reason for rebuilt etc?
|
my mechanic is checkin bores etc when the heads are skimmed. As its been sat for a year
|
new bearings , new water pump and mite as well get a new oil pump for peace of mind and use metal head gaskets
|
As above: lots of engines give up on the big end and mains just after a rebuild for head gaskets.
If the heads are to be skimmed, DO ensure that thicker gaskets are used so as to keep the compression ratio as close as possible to original. Failure to do so will lead to bearing failure:( |
as above if engine out id give it a full refresh acl bearing main and big ends can be got for less than 100 quid delivered and a cambelt kit.
|
i only say this from experince as my head went they were done and the garge took it out to check it and it knock out the big ends and im just at a 1000 miles now cant wait for mapping day get that 20g back on track
|
ok thanks
it was a reconditioned engine so im not sure of the history on it, i.e. whether head gasket had been done before. how would a mechanic no how thick the gasket will need to be? is it just the big and main bearings? |
generally you work out the comp ratio etc to get gasket thickness. yead main and big ends id replace while its out. i got these
http://www.advancedautomotives.com/s...-set-361-p.asp but you'll have to wait till engine split to order them as the cranks are different sizes and they differ from centre and rear thrust. |
As above, a decent mechanic can measure the compression ratio for you, or work it out from measurements.
|
glad i asked, ive had 2 months worth of driving out of this car, sooo much bad luck. Is it alot of work to do the bearings? Whats the difference between centre and rear thrust? How can you tell?
