Has anybody had a LPG conversion carried out on a scooby

I've been wondering about this too, what with petrol prices :eek:

Just wondering what anyone's opinions on it are as I'm thinking of fitting one

I have driven one, it was a high capacity vaporiser and it had two 8mm lines runnung to it from the tank. Other then that it was a standard set up. Went well enough, but I think if ou are on high boost or pushing 260+ then switch back to petrol.

My friend had serious issues with it and had to take it off and buy new heads.

what issues did he have with it i want to find out as much about it as i can before i decide if im gonna convert or not cheers

mines stardard WRX 2005 about 225 bhp i think, runs and accelarates perfect cost me £1100 well worth it

I've had an lpg conversion on my forester since 2007. Have had one problem with it which was burnt valves because I did not have a valve lube system installed. lpg burns hotter and is a lot dryer so if you get it done make sure you have the valve lube system. There is flash lube which is reconised, but BRC do a better one as its injected into the gas before the injectors so helps maintain them as well. Apart from that it's never gone wrong and im paying in fuel costs the same as a 44mpg car.
Also, I would recommend having it installed by an approved installer as insurance companies can go funny about it. I have the brc kit which is pretty much service free. You just have to check the hoses for leaks and change the gas filter every 10K miles. Costs about £5 from ebay.

How many miles a week do you do? what is the anual saving?

Doing on average I guess about 250 miles a week and I am currently getting just over 200 miles to a 40L tank driving at 60...ish on motorways and generally trying to drive slow.

at £0.74 a litre it costs around £30 as opposed to super which last time I put some in was £1.37 which would cost about £55 for 40L so I am saving about £25 each fill. Have done over 30K miles with the lpg system, when I first had it done it was only £0.44 a litre but has remained round half the price ever since.

thats a saving of £1625 per year based on 65 tank fulls. so you have prob saved around £3500 oveer the years with the fuel cost rise taken into consideration. What was the cost of the installation and the what was the cost of the head re-builds? engine out job that?

the install cost me around £1700, I got it on a years finance so that my outgoings wouldn't change. So in affect the saving I made in the first year paid for the conversion.

The re-build has cost me at the moment around £5K. Initial garage buggered it up. Hopefully I get a court date soon to get some of it back.

At first guys you must ask question if its worth convert Subaru to LPG,in my opinion will worth,but in some cases engine will pop,some LPG installers will recommend Flash Lube kit,some no,everything this depend on installers,but i would recommend Flash Lube,not cost too much and engine rebuild is not cheap.

At second you must ask if you want at future go for bigger power,if yes i would recommend have look for bigger vaporizer which will be OK for 400bhp,some companies offering 2xVaporizer,not one...
Plus injectors you will need at this power,where is power calculated per injector(some injectors have max power around 40-60bhp),at bigger power some companies offering 8 injector instead of 4 injector setup.

At third system which one you want BRC or AC-STAG,i've used AC-Stag 300 which has been OK,with minor tweak from LPG installer power will be same as Fuel,some LPG installer will charge you for this some no,depends what you want..

This question has been here several times,yes you can convert Subaru to LPG,just be sure you are using LPGA approved installer or LPGA company which give you at end certificate of installation of LPG,which you must send to DVLA.

Prices for fitting LPG on Subaru is from £825(excluding VAT)-£2500,AC-STAG system are slightly cheaper than BRC,but i would recommend contact some companies how much will cost.

Some companies will fit this system in one day,some will fit in couple of days,really depends on companies how long this will take..


Running cost are really low on LPG,as above you can also end with engine rebuild like few others,if its worth,you ask yourself..

In my case i was end with LPG because my engine is rebuilded(damaged valve seats cause low compression one one piston) to 2.1 stroker with some supported mods
