Speed Limit for Vans/commercial vehicle

Has anybody been caught out by these reduced limits on commercial vehicles?

Our Transport manager pointed this out to me the other day and i would say i must be bloody lucky not to have been caught out by now.
Vehicles over 2000kg ie Transit size van.

Single carriage 50mph

Dual 60mph

M'way 70mph

They have been like that for many years! Or as long as I have ever known!

RobsyUK 07 April 2011 09:18 PM

I heard that years ago too.`

97TURBO 07 April 2011 09:20 PM

I always though it only applied from your Luton Van kind of size and upwards :)

what would scooby do 07 April 2011 09:24 PM

Been the case for many years. Lots of people get caught out after hiring vans.

I'm amazed most van drivers still have a licence. I'm constantly being overtaken by vans on dual carriageways when crusiding at 70ish.

There is a huge grey area, though. Vans based on cars and some minibuses have normal limits, but some vans have extra seats and are neither one thing nor the other.

The National speed limit for a goods vehicle is 60.

Or 120 if you're driving a Sprinter. :norty:

I could be wrong on 60. I'll have to check it.

Its 60 on a dual track but 70 on a motorway for Goods vehicles not exceeding 7.5 tonnes maximum laden weight.

I had a mate pop round in his 35cwt van and it was really low at the back. I asked him about it and he opened the doors to reveal all his builders tools balanced on top of 2 ton of sand!!!!

Goods vehicles fitted with a tachograph have speed limiters fitted to restricted them to a max speed of 56mph, that includes vehicles under 7.5t and that's not optional its the law these days.

robby 08 April 2011 06:42 PM

we have sprinters at work which are limited to 78mph :(

You're right. Mercedes Sprinters are the fastest vehicles on the m'way. :thumb:

Though I got a 7 1/2 tonner to 70 (ish) downhill on a (private) motorway when we moved. Boy did it weave about ....

It's surprising how much grip a white transit has when canned round a roundabout. I was following one today and had to give it some to keep up in my scoob. :lol1:

I've been driving vans for a living for nearly 9 years now, Persil couldn't get anything cleaner than my license. :D

As a rule, knock 10mph of whatever the usual limit is when driving a van, except 30 and 40 mph limits.

Then you must be one of the few that knows the rules:luxhello:.

I've driven dozens of cop cars (don't ask) and been overtaken by vans doing 70+ on a d/c. I'm sure the majority of WVM don't know.

dunx 09 April 2011 02:46 PM

THe council dictates that we keep mini-buses to 10 mph BELOW the recommended limits !

dunx

P.S. I "obviously" ignore that in a 20/30/40 mph limit...

Doesn't mean I pay any attention to it though. :D

This may be so, but the speed limit for an heavy goods vehicle on the motorway is 60mph. On a dual carriageway (separated by a central reservation) it is 50mph and any single carriagway road is 40mph.

Quite! Most HGVs travel flat out (56mph) on all these roads.

The video posted last week showing the lorry hitting the stupid bint coming the wrong way down a slip road showed the lorry was doing 56, so technically speeding. (The article stated the video showed the lorry driver was totally blameless.):wonder:

Having said that, it is a stupid law and getting stuck behind one at 40mph on a nice road is mega annoying.

Leslie 11 April 2011 12:42 PM

Some years ago the speed limit for a van without side windows was 40mph. I had a Mini Van but the first time I went out in it there was a copper following me to see if i was going to exceed 40.

Sold it within a week!

Les
