1/4 mile racing, how to get sub 13s ?
Hello :)
Looking for a bit of help improving my 1/4 times Now I know my first task should be to tighten the nut behind the wheel, but even if it was extra tight theres no way my car could run the 1/4 mile in under 13 seconds imo I have a V3 Type R. It currently has full exhaust inc decat, equal length headers, panel filter and boost gets raised to 1.2 bar when I do a run. Its not been mapped yet so first on my shopping list is a simtek I currently run a 13.5/13.6, cross the line at 104.5mph with a 0-60 foot time of 1.9 seconds, does this sound about right to everyone ? Really looking for suggestions as to what else I should get along with the simtek to help me crack a high 12 second 1/4 mile Thanks :) |
What turbo you running mate & management? and what tyres? That sounds about right.

standard car 260 BHP? sorry wont happen. whats your terminal speed? i would guess around 100 mph. good 1/4 mile times are made in the first 60ft and 1/8th mile.
short ratio box in the type r will help. suspension setup and good choice of tyre will also help. the simtec will help in that you can increase power slightly, but unless you are prepared to spend some money you are going to find it difficult to decrease your times. look at your launch technique. try and get the 60ft times down to 1.75 - 1.8. try reving the car a bit more before changing. try short shifting if your car has nothing above 6500rpm. make sure changes are smooth remember each change is bout 0.25 seconds so one less gear change to the quarter mile will make a difference. |

Thanks for the replys
Its just on standard managment just now. The boost controller was set up at All Wheel Drive (where I take my car for servicing etc) Tyres are Conti Sport Contact 3's, cusco coilovers Terminal speed, which I'm guessing is at the end was 104.5 mph4 I've yet to try short shifting actually, but as I cross the line I'm just changing to 5th All i know about what to mod is what I've read on here to be honest, i already have a walbro pump in the house, I know I need a fuel pressure reg and probably injectors ? would all these and a FMIC and a good map get me to the magic 12's do you think ? O and its running a VF24, what powers that good for ? |
Ok mate im unsure on the turbo as i am a newbie here, and have a similar spec v4 type r as yours with added apexi management & vf34 turbo @ 1.4 bar. Was just wondering what times i could run :-\

enter power - what you think your car has weight will be 1250kg choose 4WD obviously pretty accurate for standard and modded cars. heavily modded cars (i.e. >600hp) times will rely a lot on driver technique. |

Dont worry too much about being beaten by a mini, think it had something quite decent under the bonnet and not a 1.3 cooper engine (more like a honda 2ltr civic vtec engine ;))
Tony:) |
Version 3 should have a VF23 turbo, capable of 330ish bhp once mapped
|
more revs when launching might help, i've got a heavy blob and ran a 13.134 @ 102.2 but my 60 foot time was 1.8003 and my 1/8th mile was 8.4034 @ 83.33 and car rollered 322 2 monthes before but is running with a blow turbo oil seal so down a bit on power.

a word of advice stef
you are not racing anyone here except the clock. you could sit on that line for 30 seconds and the clock wouldnt start until you break the beam. never worry about a mini beating you. concentrate on the launch. try different launch techniques. if one doesnt work i.e you bog down try something else. 1/4 mile racing is about the times not about beating other cars. try to remember what worked for you and build on that. any fool can drive a car fast and get a good time. try and get consistant 1/4 mile times takes patience and effort on your part. if you are serious about getting your times down forget about the car sat next to you on the line and concentrate on your car. dont even look over at him, just ignore him, just you, your car and the clock. |
That performance calculater gave my car these stats
Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 322 Weight without Driver (KG) : 1405 Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 232.86 0 - 60 (Secs) : 4.38 0 - 100 (Secs) : 11.37 60 - 100 (Secs) : 6.99 Quarter Mile (Secs) : 13.05 Terminal Speed (MPH) : 107.15 Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 12.65 Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 110.65 which is probably what i should be aiming for. |

Thats not a bad calculator but not worth taking it to heart, different transmission systems lose different ammounts of power, plus it doesnt calculate any cd factor, good fun though :D
Tony:D standard 276hp subaru about 14 seconds @ 100mph. any car doing a standard 1/4 in under 15 seconds is a fast car. people get too hung up chasing the magic 10 second car when in fact 10second cars are probably in the top 0.1% of cars. |

Thats a good time :) I'm pretty happy with my launches tbh just need to perfect them |

I ruined a few of my runs not launching properly as I thought the clock had started :) thanks for the advice |

With my new found knowledge i think if I had very little fuel in the car and no passangers and I took my time with the launch I may be able to get a 13.35/13.4 with a reaction time of 2 seconds lol
Or is that being optimistic ? |

you need to make them consistant stef. once you get the 60ft down to were they are all within a few hundreths of each other, then its time to spend more money. its simple physics. your car will simply not go faster until you change something. power, suspension, tyres. |
Yeah the estimate wasnt far off at all. Weight is the killer. made friends with a guy who was there in his 400bhp evo 8 that only had a drivers seat inside.
His best time was 0.012 better than mine. |

Play about with your tyre pressures, once you start getting consistent times

reaction time? or 60ft time. best reation time will be 0.4 seconds. any faster and you will red light. reaction time and 60ft times are two different things. which do you mean? a 2 second 60ft is actually pretty slow. a perfect launch should see 1.7 - 1.8. remember your good 1/4 mile times are made in the first 60ft and 1/8 mile
I meant that since I dont need to go when the light goes green i can wait 2 seconds to make sure I get a perfect launch which would give me a 2 second reaction time What do you mean by any faster than 0.4 and I'll red light ? My reaction times were all 0.4-0.55 except for one run I did My 0-60 time was 1.9, which looks like it needs work as with my lighter, shorter geared car i really should be doing better it seems |

Just now fronts = 30psi Rear = 28psi Also, DCCD settings i've tried launching on full lock the slipping it all the way back and also just going for it with an open diff from the start and cant say I noticed too much of a difference tbh Although my best 60ft time may have come with the run on locked diff |
