Taxing car with no V5 ?

Just bought a car from someone I know who hasn't had it long. He didn't get the logbook with it and has applied for a new one through dvla and has the letter from dvla confirming this.

I have no logbook for it and the tax ran out at the end of last month. Is there a way it can be taxed ? It's all legal with mot and insurance, just needs tax :brickwall

Looks like your only option is to ring DVLA Vehicle Enquiries for advice. The telephone number is 0870 240 0010.

See here:-

You'll prob need to mention/email a scan of their letter to them, as that's the only 'evidence' of the V5's existence at the mo. I'm sure the letter will be on their system though - hopefully they'll just require you to quote its reference...

Nope. You need either the tax reminder or the document reference number from the V5  And even if I could do it online they would post the tax disc to the last registered keeper.

I've called the DVLA already and got a recorded message saying if you are waiting for the V5 to be processed and the vehicle needs taxing then it must be kept off the road until the V5 arrives !!

I was just hoping there is a way around it.

Seems crazy to me how difficult they make it just to make the car legal !

joz8968 03 April 2011 04:48 PM

I agree.

But to be fair, buying a car without a V5 is a bit unusal (and prob not to be advised, despite any mitigating circumstances).

I feel your frustration though as, historicallly, the DVLA are the ****test, most incompetent 'high profile' organisation in the whole of the UK!!!!

Surprisingly though, their online system for buying a tax disc is an extremely pain-free experience (they must have had an 'off' day when they designed that! :D ;)). Setting aside your current situation, of course. ;)

I've bought loads of cars over the years with no V5 and had no issues.

Unfortunately this one needs taxing and it looks like it cannot be done now until the guy I bought it from receives the V5 in his name at which point I can tax it before sending the V5 off with me as the new keeper !

This could take weeks before I can drive it legally !

joz8968 03 April 2011 05:01 PM

Should be with you within 4 weeks or so. But don't hold your breath - this IS the DVLA we're talking about. I'd keep badgering them every week...

How long ago did he apply for it? Day/s? week/s?

I got the car yesterday. The dvla letter states that the V5 should be processed on 5/4/11 and the V5 will then be issued. It says to allow 5 working days from 5/4/11 before making enquiries about the V5 !

Is there a DVLA close to you that you could go in and talk to someone? might be a waste of time but at least it's better than a recording and you can explain your situation better as well as showing all documents/letters.

No, the previous owner to him had lost the V5 so the person I bought it from has applied for the new V5 but not received it yet.

I've just read that you can do that. As you say, go to dvla office and you can apply for new V5 and tax it at the same time.

Looks like my only option other than wait for weeks !

I've just called the dvla and asked them if I can do this and they said no. They said I have to wait for the guy I bought the car from to receive the V5 and then get the green slip from him before I can tax it !

Have you tried what you said yet ?

200sex 04 April 2011 05:26 PM

oh maybe its because yours wasnt lost to say cause you knew it was coming from the seller but hes waiting shouldnt take long for him to get it thou then you can tax it from the new keepers slip, or call dvla and see if they have even sent out or the seller has applied for the logbook they couldnt tell me the name on the docs but when i asked if it was x person they can say no or yes and if its in your mates name tax on line,

i didnt bother doing mine that way cause im skint so thought i would just send of the v62 form from post office and wait for a few weeks for it to come through and tax my car at end of the month saves paying the petrol lol

340BHP-WRX 04 April 2011 05:28 PM

Just to add that dvla said this can't be done as there will still be a registered keeper showing for the car. If it had no registered keeper then it could be done at the dvla office.

Just phoned dvla back to ask them if I can tax it online if it's in my mates name now and they said no as you need the document reference number

Why do they make it so bloody difficult !

200sex 04 April 2011 05:42 PM

sounds odd cause thats what i was told on the phone and you found it on internet maybe you spoke to a nob at dvla who didnt want to help lol cause when you fill the v62 form out there is a section on why your applying and the one i ticked was " i brought the vehicle from the previous keeper or motor trade and i have not redceived a v5c yet" so there is still a reg owner but its now going to be procesed into my name and normaly the seller gets a fine for not sending the paper work back well my old man did when he sold a car and got taken into hospital for 3 months it was only £35
