Tips needed for Spraying Wheels
 

I just wanted to know if anyone has or if anyone knows how to spray alloy wheels using a rattle can. Just trying to cut costs while looking good (hopefully) LOL

if I were you would get them sand blasted first £40. unless your really patient and don't mind the hours sanding them but eitherway when sand blasted/sanded high build primer them and then sand again with some 800 wet/dry paper till you have a dull/matt surface (no shiny patches anywhere or paint won't stick) then just paint and lacquer them spend time prepairing them and should look ok hth

Thanks m8. How many coats of each would you say is needed. i dont mind the prep time as i plan to do it over a week anyway. SO sand, Primer, Sand, colour and lacquer? Is that right lol :wonder:

its easy mate but takes most of the day !
this is how i done my civic type r and wrx alloys :D

. clean down alloy to remove dirt and brake dust etc

. use an abrasive pad with water to key the alloy . spend alot of time to get it keyed up properly as this is the most important part .

. rinse with clean water and dry

. tape off the tyre using a decent brand of masking tape and newspaper . take time to push tape sideways down the gap between tyre and wheel . and tape valves up .

. i only use halfords undercoat, satin,matt,gloss ? i find it far better than loads of other brands .

. try not to cover the alloy on the first coat ! and keep a distance of about 15 inches to avoid runs and orange peel !

. i applied 6-7 coats of grey undercoat , 10 minutes between coats
. 5-6 coats of satin black

that will work if the wheels are already mint condition my guide was for if the wheels were chipped/damaged etc sorry may have misread what you were asking if mint already do the above

also us ean acid etch primer (from halfrauds too) on any bare aluminium.

100 quid is the going rate to paint a set of wheels, any colour you wish and done with 2k clear so it will have a good finish and will not chip as easily as spray cans. Im actually painting my own wheels this weekend, its taken me six hours to bead blast them soo far, and im using a mix of solvent base coat (silver) acid etch primer, dark grey water basecoat (two tone colour scheme) and 2k high solids clear coat. But then i have a compressor and spraygun

www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk did our 17" on the focus... dropped off in the morning and picked the car back up at 5pm the same day :) all done, stripped, and re powder coated. £235.. money well spent.

keeping costs down salsa-king so wanna do it myself. Got a lot of other things lined up.

When I had my 205GTi and was out of work I decided to have a go at doing the wheels as they were blistering and looking tired. If you don't mind reading through, there is a comprehensive thread which I did on the 205gtidrivers.com forum. It went through every single stage with dozens and dozens of photo's as well as any issues incurred and the final outcome.

did mine last night, ill post up a thread, got lots of pics, cost me £25 in materials

the prep is very important and doing it well takes time, sand/bead blasting is definitely a good option it will save you hours of hand sanding and will take off any light scratches too.

With rattle cans you you can get pretty good looking results but it will never get as good a finish as professional baked on job and it won't last as long.
