TV Suggestions Please
 

I'd like to replace our pretty ancient Sony wide-screen with a bit of modern kit which hopefully represents the latest technology and doesn't weigh half a ton. It will go in a small lounge so we would only be looking at say a 32" screen, not a chav monster ;)

So I think the starting point is an HD set with Freeview and one where I can look at the web (could I access my e-mails and reply to things?).

I see some have a 3D ready facility but don't exactly know where this fits into technology development and, anyway, they don't seem to make smaller screens with this gizmo.

It would be helpful if we could record programmes so would an in-built blue ray allow this? Also like to play videos we have collected but all our video players seen to have scart connections, not usb.

The Sony we have gives excellent pictures but the wide-screen seems to distort characters - does this still happen with newer TVs?

Budget up to £600. Please give me some pointers. One final odd question - if I wanted a smaller TV for the kitchen next door do I need a whole new TV or can I just get a subsidiary screen to work wirelessly with the main TV?

I bought a sony 32ex703 (led tv with internet). very pleased with it. only used the internet bit for watching youtube/iplayer so far, so cant answer the question about emails. 32" is adequate for a small room. (it is VERY thin !!)

I would have bought one of these although with a bigger screen, but where I wanted to put the TV wouldn't allow me to use the DVD player.

brought new one just befor Christmas panasonic and more than happy with it and also won best tv for under £1000 2010 it's a 42" but they do a similar spec 32" and are all very well priced looked quite alot and found the panasonic gave alot for the money

Another vote for Panasonic Viera, here. I was wondering if there will be any supply issues with Japanese products after the current devastation out there.

In terms of a second screen, I currently feed the Panasonic box from the HDMI from the Sky+HD box, and use the output points to send the signal to the other aeriel sockets in the house. I have a Samsung 19" LCD in my bedroom which takes that signal. For the amount of tv I watch upstairs, it's not a problem to wander downstairs to change channel and it saves me the multi-room fee. I expect an after-market remote kit would allow for changing channel in another room.

I was thinking of starting a thread about how to sort out my next house as my completion date looms. I may just do it now :D

I have had Viera's for about 9 years now and there very good,but my last one had a fault.

I decided to change brands and after much researching now have a Samsung LED backlit TV.
After an hour or so setting it up,its awesome and blows away the Viera picture. I still have a 37" Viera 1080p LCD in the bedroom as a comparison...

Not expensive and 5 yrs warranty when bought from JL....

Why didnt you go for the viera led/lcd Fatscooby ?

I had a Sony Bravia and now got an LG,i actually prefer the LG over the Sony.Still use the sony for playing xbox though in spare room...:)

Panasonic viera

Sony in my opinion is over priced - I have a bank of sony 8 x 37" plasma screens in work for monitoring various things - in my opinion they are nothing special - I cant see where the premium price tag comes from, unless it is for longevity - I haven't had them in long enough to comment, they are certainly not a patch on the pioneer units they replaced which were almost 10 years old.

I bought a 42" Panasonic viera plasma for home about 2 years ago - it is a cracking TV, but found its inbuilt speakers under powered for the size of the room it is in - does anyone else find that the speaker output does not seem to increase with the size of the screen??? Doesn't matter much to me as the audio from my PVR / tuner is patched to my AV amp, the output from which can be measured on the richter scale.

I certainly wouldn't buy without looking at the current offerings from samsung.

Negotiate hard on price, I found when I was buying mine the mark-up (commission) on some manufacturers TV's was much greater than on others.

The problem you will find is TVs in 32" sizes tend to be on the lower end scale interms of panel quality. i.e it totally rules out plasma.

Which can pose a problem if the TV is in a corner and you watch it from an offset angle; I have this issue with the Viera LCD in my bedroom. Hence why the TV in the living room HAD to be a plasma (lot of seats so lot of different viewing angles).

Anyway, if you want the best picture in a 32" size, it' will be an LED. Matrix lit or "full LED" will give better blacks and less backlight bleeding compared to the edge lit (which currently dominates 90% of the current LED market).

My reccomendation is to have a look at the Philips 9000 series namely the 32PFL9705H/12. I've seen its 40" brother and personally I think its best picture and image motion from an LED TV.

Downside is its 3d is apparently not so good and it is VERY expensive (edit, oops just noticed your budget -sorry :o ). But what you are paying for is one of the best and underrated panel and picture processing technology out there IMO. Ambilight may seem to be a bit of gimmick but it does help take your attention away from any of the bleeding/black level issues that LED/LCDs tend to suffer by increasing the ambient light levels, however, if its annoying it can be turned off.

If you want to see one there is usually one on show in Best Buy (at least 40" version is), and be sure to have a good play with the picture settings incase someone has messed about with them.

Other than that I can't help; As I just bought a chavvy size 42" Panny plasma instead ;)

Another vote for Panasonic Viera, I bought my Chav sized 42" plasma in July 2005 and it's not missed a beat.

Just got a 50" 3D samsung plasma, kicks the ass out of the equivalent Panasonic. That said the 37" Viera my dad recently got is a superb TV.

Buy a panasonic, you won't regret it.

Thanks for further info chaps. I think by chav sized I had in mind the 60" plasmas used in prison cells for locked up druggies - not serious members of SN :D

Do modem LCDs still take up a huge amount space and weigh loads? I'll try and pop into my local Currys this week and have a look around.

Anyway now got plenty to have a look out for on-line.

I don't get why any tv over 32 inches is classed as 'chavy' by some people?
Doesn't it just show how visual technology has progressed? I.E being able to view perfect picutre quality on a very large screen? Are all cars with an engine over the size of 1600cc classed as 'chavy'?

Then again, I suppose it is no different to me thinking that all people with an I-Phone is a soulless loser with no imagination! :D

As for the OP, I wouldn't bother asking for advicee on 32 inch tv's on scoobynet. We are all chavs obviously! :thumb:

Gotta recreate that "assult all senses" cinema-esque experience in your home, at all costs!... The irony being, you don't have to put up with all the annoying "chavs" at the flicks! ;)
