wrighty338 13 March 2011 08:30 PM

what you got buddy? is there ones beginners should stick to? does HP matter?

butlerwrx 13 March 2011 08:47 PM

Hi mate i have a fletcher 15 foot with a 90 on the back.bin done right out cd player gps fish finder.this is my first speed boat all i have done over the years is put a bigger engine on it.It does about 40 to 55 mph depending on the sea state.
does hp matter depends on the shape of your boat and how wall it cuts through the water.
ie you could have a 15 foot narrow hull and a 40 bhp on the back and a 15 foot wide hull with a 80 on the back and the 40 will keep up with it.will see if i can get some pics up of mine.

We've got a little Salcombe Flyer 440 (14.5ft) with a 2 stroke 60. Weighs very little so goes like the clappers.

Spent most of yesterday tidying it up (many goes with marine rubbing compound and a machine polisher then waxed it - the blue was a bit faded, then jetwashed, etc, etc) and got it in the water for the first time this year - we have a pontoon mooring.

Lush to get out - had a decent full throttle blast around the Carrick Roads (which is an estuary, not a road!). Recently had a custom made cover done (the old one leaked), some engine/gearbox work and a full antifouling so it's looking fairly good now:

This is the boat when it was warm - what seems like aeons ago!

Didn't cost much to buy, not too bad on fuel, great for whizzing to seaside/riverside pubs, can waterski behind it and get to quiet beaches accessible only by boat even in the middle of August.

Oh and we made money on our last boat due after a wee bit of restoration work.

Get one - the freedom they give you is worth it alone!

You need one of these puppies ;)

Quite a nippy boat

I've got a Cranchi 21' with a thirsty 5.5l V8, great for a bit of summer fun! Had a fletcher 17' before hand, probably a good sized boat to break in your captain's cap!

Matteeboy 14 March 2011 10:35 AM

Loads of hidden beaches around here so the ability to be able to beach it then haul it back if needed is very handy.

Big boats are great but go from a smallish hobby to a major investment. Even a jump from our boat to a 17ft Boston Whaler with a 90/115 is a massive leap in fuel costs and you can't stick it anywhere. Ours just gets away with being a "tender" so you can moor it where you like. Handy.

Please if you get one do the RYI power-boating course asap.

Best description is standing in the shower and burning 20.00 notes.

Had a 16' Fletcher GTO with a 90hp Yam outboard for skiing and fecking around in. It was a great laugh but not a cheap hobby, with fuel, servicing and not forgetting insurance!

The RYI course is a good idea especially if you haven't had a boat before.

If you plan to trailer it check the trailer is in good roadworthy nick, they tend to get forgotten about but remember it is vital for safety and the well-being of your boat. They can easily cost £1000 upwards for a half decent one.

Scooby Soon! 14 March 2011 02:41 PM

Don't you have to live on a council estate to own a speedboat?

:wonder:

Eh? Most of the £1m++ houses around here have a speedboat somewhere about the place.

scooby L 15 March 2011 10:16 AM

I weighed the odds and ended up with one of these

http://i318.photobucket.com/albums/m...kyle/jet-1.jpg

215hp and 70mph on flat water... butt clenchingly quick... ran it for 3 years and loved every moment... easier to launch/retrieve than a boat, quicker than 80% of speed boats (sea state permitting) safer due to no prop in the water and capable of towing toys, wakeboarders and waterskiers all day long...

Now saving for one of these...:D

As Paul said... do an RYA course (Jet ski do Level (1 & 2) and Powerboat 2)

alistair 18 March 2011 11:27 PM

My summer toy -

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j1...s/P1010798.jpg

240hp v6 mercury engine - impeller so handles like a jet ski and no external prop, so safe with kids and runs OK in shallow water

They certainly make cars look economical. On our mastercraft we had a supercharged V8 5.5, you put in a couple of hundred £ and if you use it flat out its all gone within a few hours. Depending on your budget you could take a look in the American market, even after tax it is possible to get some good savings. Im not sure what the exchange rate is as I no longer have any need to follow it but certainly a few years ago it was significantly cheaper.
Also we found out that after 5 years things started to go wrong a bit to easily and frequently and many people try to sell before it gets that old.
