quick question,quick answer

Why cant a 97 jdm wrx ecu be remapped?

Can any other tuned/upgraded ecu's be fitted?

Cheers

Coz it just can't, not sure why, that's just the way it is. There are chis you can get to plug in for diff states of tune that some people use, or there are aftermarket ecu such as apexi power fc, motec, simtek and many others that can be fitted and mapped to suit. Prices vary

Chips are cheaper than the ecu's. A simtek supplied and fitted and mapped will be around the £1200 mark.

The chips on the Ecus are PROMs and not EEPROM based, so basically can be written to but not re-written. Whereas later 99-on are EPROM based so can be re-written to.

My advice would be to get yourself an Apexi ECU, these are really fantastic units for the price and give factory spec cold starting along with the ability to live map. Simteks and Syvecs are very capable, but unecessary unless you reach the limit of the MAF, (even then Apexi can suite needs), or want to start radically modifying your vehicle.

Cheers guys. I couldnt afford a new ecu at the minute do u have any recommendations for a good chip? Iv seen them on ebay etc but wouldnt trust them i dont think..

Also what is a 97 jdm wrx v-limited power output standard?

Don't touch eBay. You got that right. Empty box with wires sticking out is all you will get or worse, one with junk in to ruin your car. I'm not clued up where to buy good chips from as I have never used one. All I can say is so your research.

I once had a golf gttdi that was chipped by the previous owner. He had put the recipt in the folder for the chip supplied and fitted. Cost him best part of 400 quid. The car flew. So I'm guessing an eBay 60 quid item or whatever ain't going to cut it IMHO.

Very true.prob best to save for the apexi then..

I did my research before I bought my scoob and the remap issue is partly why I bought a my99 car, so it could be easily remapped. Keep ya eyed peeled in the for sale section as there are often ecu bargains on there. :thumb:

If you are going to buy a chip make sure you get a genuine Scott T chip or a major sarcasm chip. The ebay chips are gash!
