Noticed on this forum that many Scooby owners, especially P1's, are having real problems with stone chips. Is the Impreza shape just inherently more prone to stone chips than most cars or is the nature of the paintwork the cause for these problems. Just worried because I'm just about to change my Evo VI for a P1, and despite the Evo being 18 months old, it's hardly got any stone chips at all..

I think the problem is blue metallic paint, with a white undercoat, it just happens that a large percentage of scoobs are this colour, hence they seem more susceptible. My last car was metalic blue and I needed the whole front of the car resprayed in the end due to stone chips.

Don't know if it is down to luck of the fact that I don't do many motorway miles, but I have had my car for a year and 10,000 miles and can only find one small stone chip on the bonnet.

Car is DBM.

It is also pretty well acknowledged that Japanese cars use very soft base paints.

Armourfend can help, but I was just interested in whether the paint quality of the Impreza is to blame or if it's just the shape of the car that makes it especially vulnerable to stone chips?

I had my STI5 TypeR V-ltd last year and did 17,000 miles in 9 months! Sure it got as little chipped here and there, but it was never really bad.

However, do avoid following someone too close and avoid gritters as if your life depended on it! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Mudflaps also helped stop chipping on the lower part of the doors and rear three-quarter panel

We were told by our Scooby garage that the Scoobs with red metallic paint were very susceptible to chipping.

We had our bonnet repsrayed as it got so bad, but some chips have reappeared, anddown the side of the car, on the upper body panels.

Red - non-metalic - stone chips too!

I've had 3 different Scoobs since the beginning of 1998 (A Reddish Blue Turbo, an RB5 & now a Catalunya). All 3 have been very susceptable to stone chips, mostly on the bonnet but a few up the sides & even on the roof!! The RB5 I had was only 2 weeks old when it got a major chip combined with small dent on the bonnet!! GRRRR!!

This combined with those selfish gits in car parks that use your Scooby as a door stop, seriously p1ss3s me off. Double GRRRR!! Thinking of getting the side protectors as fitted to Chiark's DMB Scoob.

Does the armourfend really help with the stone chip prevention? How much does an Impreza kit cost? Can it be used on a 3& 1/2 year old Cat providing the existing stone chips were treated &/or touched-up?

Try having a dark coloured Elise...That's a nightmare.

My WRX will be silver which should help. But I'm going to get the armour stuff as well just to be sure. I've seen it "in action" on some Elises and the difference is amazing.

Hi Martin.....Yeah I have the same problem too....But i'm glad you have seen the light and bought a scooby......I had to have my headlight changed because of stones i've now bought the headlight and driving light protectors......My advise to you is to have them put on when you get your P1......Good luck with it

Maybe the fact that scoobies will tend to hit the gravel/stones at a higher speed than most cars may be a small factor here?

I'll have to drive slowly in the P1 then..

The force of impact (kinetic energy) from stone chips is proportional to the square of the velocity of travel, so the same stone hitting you at 100 mph is four times as damaging as one at 50 mph. So nearer to which speed do Scoob drivers travel mostly?
