my95 running like a dog

hey all,

my mate has just got a my95 (with 555 special edition stickers on it) sti and it's not running right.
the idle is lumpy and it still feels lumps as it's reved. it cut out on him while out in it yesterday but did restart.

car:
1995 blue 4 door with roof scoop ej20 engine. claims to be a 555 but don't know how to check. it is an import.
engine mods:
exhaust, fmic, dv, filter, no aircon.

the engine doesn't idle or rev smoothly, feels like it's missing a bit.
so far checked:
*pulled the MAF plug off and it stalls
*checked the fuel pump plug which seems to be ok.
*pulled the idle speed plug off and the revs went up to 1500ish. took the whole idle unit off the inlet and it wasn't too bad inside. moved the top part about a bit and it idles much better now but still lumpy.
*took the TPS plug off and no change

i don't know where the water temp sensor is, while looking i found a plug under the MAF in the head, between the 2 inlet ports, took it off with no change.

any ideas?

i'm getting him to check the sprak plugs as that looks like a pain of a job but i'm lost as to what the problem might be. as it's lumpy up the revs i'm not sure it's the idle control valve.

thanks people

coil packs faulty mate??

LDA 18 February 2011 09:16 AM

how could i test them?

scogsywrx 18 February 2011 09:19 AM

not too sure mate your best bet is too just take them out and remove the rubber cover carefully and see if there are any cracks on the end.

look very closely cos they could only be hairline cracks and that would make them fail.

if you need advice on getting them out just ask :)

yeah, any tips would be great please

the water temperature sensor that you cant find is located under the intake manifold, slightly to the back, and on the drivers side of centre if i remember correctly

there will be 2. the small one is just for the dial on the dash, the big one is for the ecu

Sticky / broken dump valve? I had a spring go in mine and the idle went all to pot. On a MY95 just take off the DV and block up the hole to see if that improves the idle. You could also leave it blanked off for the lovely TD05 compressor stall noise :norty::norty::norty:

i'll give the DV a test and see what happens.

i'll have to get the intake pipework off and find them temp sensors. is there anyway to test them?

like if i pull the plug off should the idle change? or if i get a multimeter on there, what should the resistance be?

andy-m 18 February 2011 01:53 PM

you dont need to take the intake manifold of. its just a bit fiddley to do get to the temp sensor is all. have the swear box ready

nah i meant the hose from the MAF to the inletmanifold will have to come off i think. not taking the manifold off if i can help it.

Best do a compression test....
