Need a gearbox for a 57 Fiat punto 1.2 any advice/info welcome
 

Hi guys I need a new/secondhand gearbox for a 57 reg Fiat punto 1.2ltr

Got told today that my girlfriends car needs a new gearbox. Just spent a fortune on the scoob and I'm now redundant so have very little money.

Thinking second had but don't want to spend again a couple of months down the road so need it from a reputable source if I go that way.

what's a good price new and secondhand?
Any help/advice appreciated, I could have done without this at the mo:(

wHAT ABOUT GETTING IT REBUILT - LOCAL SPECIALIST - WHAT'S WRONG WITH IT, AS LONG AS THE CASING IS IN TACT IT SHOULD BE REBUILD-ABLE.

Went to performance tyres and the guy said the gearbox has gone dry? could have sworn we had it serviced a while back but he says the noise I can hear sometimes is due to lack of oil in the box. The car runs fine and changes gear fine, its just a scraping noise I can hear whilst driving. I thought it was the wheel bearings.

Hi again. Based on what you have said i would get it topped up with some g/box oil asap and see how it goes, get it to a gearbox specialist and ask them to have a listen to it, do not tell them what the other chap said, just let them tell you what is up with it.

It may just require some oil.

Cheers for the replies:thumb: Only had the car 2 years and its only 3.5 years old should it have lost all its oil in that time? there's no leak:confused:

Going to have another word with the guy when I take my scooby in for new pads. I have no idea where a gearbox specialist would be here in Cambridge, will do a bit of hunting. If I can find anyone I'm thinking of getting a repair if its cheaper.

I am guessing ity hasn't got a ballistic mileage on it so it should not be a worn out box as such. It is unlikely to have used the oil, could have lost it due to leakage but there would be signs of the leak although gearboxes tend to hold-1-2l as a rule of thumb. It may be it was incorrectly filled when new.

Silly question i am assuming it is a manual, not an auto?

Get a second opinion - ideally from someone you know and trust.:)

To add there is a place i used in Northampton which is very good, used by a lot of the local garages to rebuild gearboxes. I took in a Mitsi gearbox and was very pleased - when i spoke to them on the phone the guy immediately knew what the weak points where with that particular box and how much/what was required - i know as i had researched it well before spending my hard earned.
It is probably a bit far for you to travel, i would ask in the relevant 'Regional' section (East Anglia?) if anyone can reccommend a specialist if i was you.:)

Cheers again mate thats a great help:thumb: The cars a manual, we got it from the car people 2 years ago today, think its only got 20 odd k miles on it.

The guy I spoke to I trust but not sure on his advise this time so will deff get a second opinion. As it may be a manufacture issue I think I'll call the car people and see what they say. Always hated Fiats but this car had good reviews and looks good:) def wont be getting Fiat again, was told it has the same gearbox as the old models:mad: f 'd known that I wouldn't have got it.

Sorry you just fitted all that to your car for 300?:confused:

is it a 6 speed box in it. a mate of mine has 1 for sale.

Hmmm good price. Going to get second opinion before doing anything though as the the car drives fine, gear changes are good:confused: I'd have thought a dead or dieing gearbox would have problems changing gear? Like I say the car seems fine, apart from a scraping noise that comes and goes. I thought it may be wheel bearings but my mechanic says gearbox.

I the noise comes and goes and gear selection is fine then i do doubt it is the gearbox internals (bearing in mind i haven't actually heard or tried it:)). I would look to something rubbing on the gearbox, the selector mechanism, gearbox and engine mounts and also exhaust rubbing and also if something (debris from the road) has become lodged.

Do get the gearbox oil level topped up ASAP!

It is confusing as I trust theses guys, they've saved me a lot of money with my scoob over the years. I really cant see how it can be dead or on its way out if the gears change ok, odd. I've got details of a local place another member gave me, will give em a call on Monday. Will have to drive my girlfriend to work and back for now:rolleyes: dont want her driving my scoob :lol1: and the fiat will stay put till I know whats going on.

Ok had it looked at again today. Seems it may just be drive shaft seals? there was some sign of leakage, apparently due to these seals. car didn't make the noise today ether after being of the road for a few days:wonder:
