2.5 engine or 2.1

i no why poeple use 2.1 or 2.35 but what is the reason there is not many 500bhp engines cheers

stevebt 29 January 2011 04:33 PM

I would go with the 2.1 on a closed deck block. The 2.5 will make more torque but the 2.1 will make more power ;)

That all depends on the size of the turbo really.........

Why isn't there many 500bhp engines? Cost.......purely cost!

Oh, I've chosen the 2.1 CDB route for my new one.

C. J. 29 January 2011 04:47 PM

2.35 , best of both worlds :thumb:

Mus 29 January 2011 05:12 PM

the supporting mods gearbox, clutch, coilovers, breaks, anti roll bars, injectors and much more it's a big jump from 400 to 500 and it's expensive.

2.1 more for drag use 2.5 more for road use although 2.1 will make a nice road car but not as nice as a 2.5

HRT 29 January 2011 06:04 PM

I have both a 2184cc wrx with a GT3071 for hillclimbs and a 2.5 STi with MD321t for road use. The 2.5l is much easier car to drive in traffic. The extra torque available at lower revs makes a difference. Same power about 470bhp but the 2.5l has an extra 70ftlbs torque. I am considering a 2.5l for hillclimbs as well due to this.

oobyJu 29 January 2011 07:03 PM

prefer my 2.5 to the original 2.0, the extra torque makes for more relaxed driving but not as free revving as the 2.0 same BHP though just not as savage

dunx 29 January 2011 07:46 PM

A friend of mine had four built 2.5's fail at 500+ bhp

He now runs a 650 bhp 2.1 bult by Alan Jeffery at Enginetuner. and it laughs at the punishment.

Guess which I'm aiming to buy currently ?

A 2.5?

I love mine, SO easy to drive yet it will spin all 4 wheels at 80 in the dry in 4th.

banny sti 29 January 2011 09:16 PM

Stick with a newage sti 2 litre engine, im running one at 500 + and hammer the living daylights out of it!

Anger 29 January 2011 09:25 PM

I had a 2.1 fitted this week with a MD321X, JGM mapped it thursday and it maded 497bhp 437lbs/ft on V-power

No right/wrong answer to this one mate. Any of the above with good rods, pistons and a good builder is going to put a big smile on your face. Depends on your end goal really?

Stay away from the cheap end of the market rods, if going for the 2.1.

Think the only answer to thread is above.

Spot on..:thumb:

Don't get me wrong the 2.5 is quite a beast, but haven't seen one last ( at my budget ) running 550 bhp. So a slightly less torquey 2.1 that will rev to 8K rpm is fine for me...

High power 2.5 builds can and do last...... my Spec C was testiment to that one, and it took a right beating. ;) It is all about the parts, the engine builder and the mapper imo.

However.... the 2.1ltr is a good option all things being equal.

I had the same questions last year , i don’t think there is a answer it’s all down to personal preference and budget. I went with the 2.35 to try and get a compromise between the 2.0 – 2.5, so far i am very happy with the results and the way it drives.
