why the **** wont it move back so i can put it back together??

can they sieze??

Have you got the brake fluid reservoir cap off?

In my defense, ive never done brakes before and i had no tools. I did the front at a friends yesterday who talked me through it, but hes busy now so i remembered everything i needed and went and bought the tools, then attempted it.
Got the discs on (with help from Ian Godney on the phone!!) got the pads in, then because the piston wouldnt go back i had to put the old pads back on.

I thought it must be to do with the fluid. I toook the brake line clamp off and tried it with the bleed nipple open and closed.
Half took the caliper off the other side and when that wouldnt go back either i gave up.

So all my trouble was coz of the cap?!!

and after i posted this i went back out to try once more with mole grips and a hammer and then put it all back together. Should have checked this first!!

Even with the cap off if may well still be stuck. When I did mine at the weekend it pushed back very easily and I never removed the cap.

The fact that you had the bleed nipple open and it would still not go back suggests to me that it is stuck as that should have released a lot of pressure from the system IMO, but may well be wrong.

Having the cap still on wouldn't stop the rear pistons going back in , if its not going back in it needs cleaning , the pistons are not known for rusting , they do get dusty and mucking from road grime .
What you can do is pump the pedal slowly to get the pistons nearly all the way out of the calipers , pull back the dust covers and clean the pistons with a scouring pad and WD40 , if they are nice and clean , they should go back in easy , if they still won't go in easy , it could be the outer lip in the bore of the caliper body needs cleaning , but the piston will need removing to do this.

You need to check the sliders are free as well , but these should be easier to sort out if they are sticky
